Grey squirrels: The furry terrorists

The grey squirrel is a common mammal that can delight you by its acrobatic movements and annoy by damaging trees, feeding on flower buds, bulbs, fruits and vegetables at the same time. Sciurus carolinensis, a common name grey squirrel, is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus. It is native to eastern North America.

These furry terrorists attack a wide range of ornamental plants, fruits, and vegetables. Tulip bulbs, crocus corms, sweet corn, strawberries, apples, pears, nuts, sunflower seed heads and flower buds of camellias and magnolias are affected the most.

Grey squirrels damage trees by gnawing at the stem to get to the sweet, sap-filled layers (phloem tissue) just beneath the bark with their sharp incisors as a part of their oral maintenance. This tissue is responsible for the movement of sugars around the plant known as translocation. If this gnawing extends around the stem, then the movement of sugars around the plant will come to a halt and the tree will die.

Bark stripping damage usually starts at the end of April and continues until the end of July. Trees are stripped anywhere on the main stem and branches, with vigorously growing and dominant trees generally being most affected. Damage levels vary between years and across sites within the same year. Planted or naturally regenerated trees aged between 10 and 40 years, especially sycamore, beech,  oak, sweet chestnut, pine, larch, and Norway spruce, are most vulnerable to damage. Other species, especially broadleaves may also be damaged. The damages caused by the bark stripping act as a major discouragement to the planting of broadleaved and coniferous trees for timber as it reduces the value of the final crop.

Up to 5% of damaged trees may die and many more will have degraded timber value through stem deformation, rot, and broken tops. Oak, poplar, Scots pine and Norway spruce are particularly vulnerable to stem breakage. The fungal invasion at the damage site results in staining and rotting, reducing the value of the timber. Damage to branches in the canopy may cause dieback, affecting the timber yield.

Other damages caused by grey squirrels include digging up and feeding on bulbs and corms. Squirrels can also affect populations of small birds in woodlands by eating eggs and nestlings. Also, these little critters damage lawns by burying or digging up winter food stores and gnaw on plastic, such as hosepipes and plastic netting as a part of their oral maintenance. In addition, there may be indirect competition, e.g. for food, between grey squirrels and the red squirrel. Grey squirrels also carry squirrel pox virus, an infection fatal to red squirrels.

Grey squirrel still a problem despite growing pine marten population

Research led by Queen’s University Belfast has found that whilst red squirrels are responding positively to the increased presence of the pine marten across Ireland and Britain, its ability to control the grey squirrel is limited by the lack of forest cover and the presence of urban refugia.

The research, carried out in partnership with National Museums Northern Ireland, was published earlier this week in Journal of Applied Ecology.

It found that despite the on-going recovery of the pine marten, and its ability to provide natural biological control of the invasive grey squirrel, isolated populations of grey squirrels in parklands in towns and cities are still likely to persist.

The study used data from 332 sites across Northern Ireland covering all sizes and shapes of woodlands in both urban and non-urban areas.

The Prince recalls seeing reds in Sandringham, Norfolk, as a child but can now only see the species in the Royal estates in Scotland.

Rodent damage in Agriculture industry!

Experts from Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana, today issued an advisory to farmers in the Malwa belt on rodent control during the germination stage in direct seeded rice (DSR) fields.

Farmers said rats were creating problems in the fields owing to the persistent dry weather conditions.

Agricultural experts said irrigation and puddling of fields in manual rice transplantation naturally destroyed rodent burrows (holes), but in direct seeded rice fields, farmers needed to kill them.

The lesser bandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis, is the predominant rodent pest species in Punjab, causing a huge damage to various crops. Its burrows could be identified in crop fields from loose heaps of soil. Other rodent species found in crop fields include soft furred field rat, Millardia meltada; Indian gerbil,Tatera indica; Indian bush rat, Golunda ellioti; and field mouse, Mus booduga.

The rodent that has launched a multi-agency task force is now threatening San Joaquin County.

Notorious Beavers!!

Castor Canadensis commonly known as ‘Beaver’ is a semi-aquatic rodent. They spend most of their time in rivers and streams. Beavers are pure vegetarian; they live on fresh leaves, barks, stems, branches, and twigs. Cattail and water lily tubers are their favorite food. They have very sharp incisors which grow throughout their life.

Hence to keep them in check they chew on any kind of tree, wooden objects and sometimes on polymer pipes connected to swimming pools, sewer lines, drainage pipes etc.  

Beavers are well known for their dam building skills. They create dams to raise the water level to build their home or lodges in water. BURNETT COUNTY–– “It’s been frustrating, so we had to bring in a guy to come in and do some beaver trapping,” Airport Manager Chuck Shultz told the infrastructure committee last week. “It’s a private trapper that the DNR in Grantsburg suggested.”

“This is a pretty common thing for Burnett County,” Rod said. “It’s hard to tell how many are left out there.”

Rod explained that the beavers live in a 30-40 acre area surrounding the airport. In that area, they have built five different dams.

Shultz said the dams create giant pools of water at the airport and the nuisance beavers are the main concern.

Flying squirrels – Nuisance pests

You thought that this squirrel has wings, but that is not so. Though called as flying squirrels they do not have wings!

Contrary to their common name, these small tree squirrels actually glide instead of fly. They stretch out their legs, spreading the fold of skin between the front and hind legs, to form a kind of parachute that lets them glide from branch to branch.

Flying squirrels are mostly nocturnal, and can be distinguished from regular squirrels by their large, orbital eyes.

They are also known to be the most carnivorous of the group, feeding primarily on nuts and seeds, but also on insects and bird eggs.

These squirrels feed on nuts, acorns seeds, berries, some insects and bird eggs. In preparation for the colder months, some of the food is stored in the nest chamber, while the rest is hoarded in tree crotches.

Flying squirrels become pests when they take up residence in an attic where they can cause a noticeable odor and damage with their urine. The species is of very minor medical concern.

Although flying squirrels can glide for long distances, 100 feet or more depending on the starting height, Eastern Gray Squirrels can also jump a fair distance.

Some experts claim that if a flyer is 80 feet up in the air, it can glide for hundreds of feet. A flying squirrel can adjust their flight pattern via their tail and wrist bone. When preparing to land, they slow their decent with a parachute style curvature.

The life expectancy for a flying squirrel is six years and can extend to fifteen years if they are held in captivity.

Although hard to notice in the wild, and sometimes in your house, flying squirrels can quickly become hard to solve a problem once they decide to invade your home. As a matter of fact, because of their troublesome nature and the extreme frustration, they cause homeowners who end up with flying squirrels in their attic or walls.

A slew of homeless flying squirrels – all healthy – are spending the winter with wildlife rehabilitator Connie Heibert in Virginia Beach.

They are refugees from Diana Bailey’s attic in Lake Lawson near Northampton Boulevard in Virginia Beach.

The nocturnal critters began partying their nights away in December. And Bailey sent me this report a couple weeks ago: “Right now they are holding hockey matches back and forth across my bedroom ceiling about midnight most evenings.”

Squirrel responsible for damaging Christmas lights in New Jersey town

A New Jersey town’s search for the vandal who damaged a popular Christmas lights display came to an end Saturday when officials discovered the Grinch was actually a medium-sized rodent.

Officials in Sea Girt, 65 miles south of New York City, spent the past week scrambling to replace the display’s severed wires in time for the borough’s annual tree lighting on Friday, WNBC-TV reported.

The morning after the ceremony, the Sea Girt Police Department said it caught the vandal in the act, posting photos on social media of a squirrel climbing on the display and trying to take a bite out of the wires before running away.

“The Sea Girt Police Department is proud to report that the case of our broken holiday lights has been solved,” the department said in a press release. “We are happy that no human acted as a grinch in this incident. The squirrel was ‘charged’ with criminal mischief and released on bail.”

The discovery of the damaged wires originally had some residents thinking a vandal was trying to sabotage the holiday spirit.

Troublesome squirrels

Turns out the common squirrel has an uncommon tendency for nibbling through the nation’s fiber optic cables.

Squirrels damage electrical distribution facilities by tunneling, by chewing through electrical insulation, or by simultaneously coming into contact with two conductors at different electrical potentials.

Squirrel causes power outage in Manassas

The City of Manassas experienced a brief power outage on Monday morning affecting 493 customers.

The culprit – a squirrel.

At 8:25 a.m. the power went out. It was restored in 23 minutes.

Residents pay the city of Manassas for their electricity.

The city provides power to all of its residents with 205 miles of primary power lines.

Battling rat infestation amidst a pandemic

As self-isolation becomes mandatory in more cities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, rats are becoming bolder in their search for food.

Coronavirus: People ‘harassed by rats’ during lockdown

Pest controllers are receiving more reports of rats around homes and gardens during the coronavirus lockdown.

The British Pest Control Association has seen a 51% rise in rat call-outs since March, which experts said could be because restaurants and shops are closed.

Professor of Ecology at Greenwich University, Steven Belmain, said the animals are looking for alterative food sources.

Dan Dobson, a Hampshire pest controller, said some people have even reported being “harassed” by rodents.

Rodent nuisance in offices

Your office provides an exceptional shelter for mice; it hides them from the cold weather and protects them from predators. To add to this with all the food you leave behind, your office is like a giant all-you-can-eat buffet.

There are many ways in which a mouse, or rat, can get into your office. Mice are very flexible creatures, able to run and jump at great lengths, as well as climb almost any surface. A young mouse can squeeze through a gap as small as a finger ring.

Bhawanipatna: In a bizarre incident, the rubber stamps at Golamunda CDPO office in Kalahandi district have gone missing. The officials have blamed rats for the development. They claimed that rats had devoured the rubber stamps.

Sources said, Premlal Sunani a resident of Khasiguda village under Golamunda block in the district went to the CDPO office to file a RTI application. He wanted to get data on the distribution of Chhatua (Multi-grain Cereal powder) and pre-school kit in Golamunda block.

After receiving the application, public information officer (PRO) Phuralia Majhi signed on a duplicate copy and marked it as ‘received’. However, there was no official stamp or seal on the document.

When Sunani did not find the official stamp on either of the two copies and only the signature of the PRO, he asked for reasons. The PRO then told him that rats had eaten up all the official rubber stamps.

President Muhammadu Buhari will work from home after rodents damaged his official office during a more than 100-day overseas medical absence, a presidential spokesman disclosed on Tuesday.

The rodents damaged furniture and air conditioning fittings in the president’s official Abuja office while he was in London receiving treatment

But government spokesman Garba Shehu said the office required renovation after damage was done to the furniture and air conditioning in his absence.

He told the BBC the president had a “well-equipped” office at home that he could work “perfectly” from.

Manhattan post office overrun by RATS as rodents devour parcels

With 16.5 billion letters, packages and cards expected through the U.S. Postal Service this holiday season, the last obstacle senders might expect their packages to face, are thieving rats.

A post office in Manhattan is fighting a rat infestation leaving chewed boxes and envelopes that carries any item found edible, by both human and rodent taste. 

Packages found deliverable despite their outside damage of visible gnawing and gaping holes are showing up in the hands of their recipients as mere shells.

The little animals can smell the chocolate and goodies,’ Maureen Marion, a USPS spokeswoman for the North East told the New York Times, whose office has found the most reported damaged packages.

On Monday the post office changed its usual visitation by an exterminator from every two weeks to once a week.

Ms Marion says that for items ‘damaged in handling,’ unless they were insured, there is no ability for compensation, ‘regardless of the nature of the damage.’

What could be the biggest threat to the restaurants?

Could it be the terrorist attack or could it be the flood from the river alongside!? 

To make you wonder, it would be none of the above but an attack by pests!

The presence of pests in restaurants is intolerable. It is just not an unpleasant sight, but is an unhygienic condition as well!

Restaurants are the best source for the rodents to have a great meal for themselves. Rodents are associated with a number of health risks; these diseases can be spread to humans directly or indirectly through contact with rodents feces, urine, saliva, rodent bites or fleas. Hantavirus: This virus can be transmitted when rodent waste is stirred up

Salmonella: Small rodents known to frequently carry the salmonella bacteria in their digestive tract, it spread through contact with rodent waste

Rat-bite fever: Rat-bite fever can occur in people who have been bitten or infected by the rat or another animal that has been contaminated by a rodent carrying disease

A Chinatown restaurant that claimed to be of “high quality” was forced to temporarily shut after it was found to be infested with rodents.

Hunan Restaurant in Manchester’s Chinese district was so badly infested that mouse droppings were spotted on its work surfaces and food.

The extent to which the restaurant was infested was only laid bare when Manchester Council’s Environmental Health Officer carried out an inspection.

During the inspection, food packaging was found to have been gnawed on by mice, and mouse droppings were also found on food stock and near food containers.

The inspection also highlighted poor hygiene, with food building up around kitchen equipment, dirty air filters and unclean surfaces.

Access holes for rodents were found in the floor, around pipework and under doors – allowing mice to roam free about the restaurant.

(CNN)With restaurants closed or open with limited capacity due to the coronavirus pandemic, a certain subset of those establishments’ “patrons” is struggling.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning that certain areas across the country are reporting “an increase in rodent activity,” as rats search for sources of food other than restaurant dumpsters.

“Jurisdictions have closed or limited service at restaurants and other commercial establishments to help limit the spread of COVID-19,” the CDC said. “Rodents rely on the food and waste generated by these establishments. Community-wide closures have led to a decrease in food available to rodents, especially in dense commercial areas.”

Local country club restaurant shut down after the inspector finds evidence of rodents

A state health inspector temporarily closed the restaurant at an (Orange Country) country club after finding evidence of rodents.

The Rio Pinar Country Club restaurant, called Champions Grill on its website, was closed Dec. 6 after the inspector found dozens of rodent droppings in the kitchen and in storage areas.

The club is located at 8600 El Prado Drive in eastern Orange County.

“More than 20 dark fresh moist rodent droppings on shelves in the storage room in the kitchen area,” one of the violations read, according to the report from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The report noted rodent droppings under a dish machine, behind a cooler and in various other areas on the floor and in a plastic bucket.

There were also scratch marks along walls.

The evidence of rodents was among 31 violations the restaurant at the Rio Pinar Country Club totaled during the inspection, including five high-priority violations.

The restaurant was closed for two days until being allowed to reopen Dec. 8 after a follow-up inspection.
