Rat-Proofing Your Gas Pipes: Effective Solutions to Prevent Rodent Damage

Rodent damage to gas pipes is a serious issue that can have potentially dangerous consequences. Rats, mice, and other rodents can cause damage to gas pipes by gnawing on them, which can lead to small holes or cracks in the pipes. These holes can cause gas leaks that can be hazardous to your health and safety.

Rats are known to gnaw on gas pipes for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is that rats have constantly growing teeth that need to be kept sharp and trimmed down. Gnawing on hard objects like gas pipes helps to keep their teeth in good condition.

In addition to keeping their teeth in good shape, rats also gnaw on gas pipes for other reasons, such as:

  1. Access to water: Gas pipes often have condensation on the outside, which can provide rats with a source of water.
  2. Access to food: Gas pipes can sometimes have traces of natural gas or other substances that rats find appealing.
  3. Building nests: Rats will often gnaw on gas pipes to create openings that they can use to build nests.
  4. Navigation: Rats use their teeth to create pathways through solid objects, including gas pipes, to move around more easily.
  5. Environmental stress: Rats may gnaw on gas pipes due to environmental stressors, such as overcrowding or lack of food, which can cause them to exhibit compulsive behaviours.

Identifying Rodent Damage to Gas Pipes

The first step in preventing rodent damage to gas pipes is identifying the problem. There are a few signs that you can look for to determine if rodents have caused damage to your gas pipes.

First, if you smell gas, it is important to take action immediately. Turn off the gas supply and contact your gas company to report the leak. If you notice any of the following signs, it could be an indication of rodent damage:

  • Chew marks or scratches on gas pipes
  • Holes in gas pipes
  • Gas meter showing a higher usage than normal
  • Rodent droppings or nests near gas pipes
Grey Lynn homeowner shocked after rats chew through gas pipes, causing dangerous leak

By Ben Leahy

25 Feb, 2023

An Auckland homeowner says he’s lucky his house didn’t blow up while he was holidaying overseas after rats chewed through piping, causing a major gas leak.

Now Grey Lynn resident Jeff Blue is calling for changes to regulations governing multi-layer gas pipes – made from a composite of plastics and aluminium – saying it’s a matter of time until someone is hurt or dies.

Pipe manufacturer Reliance Worldwide Corporation (RWC) says its products meet all official standards, while the NZ Plumbers, Drainlayers and Gasfitters Association says it has not heard of many instances of rats chewing through gas pipes.

Blue, however, said a potential explosion was only averted at his home thanks to builders working on the property next door.

They called him early one morning while he was overseas saying they could smell gas coming from his property and needed someone to open the house up as quickly as possible or else they’d have to call the fire brigade.

Blue said so much gas had by that time spilled into his house that had someone lit a spark, the explosion could have spread to nearby homes.

“Not just our house, but probably the surrounding neighbourhood would have been taken out as well,” he said.

While multi-layer pipes (MLPs) have become highly popular in the building industry – especially in new homes – over the last 10-15 years, Blue believed the ability of rats to chew through them made them a “systemic” risk in homes across the country.

He said he called in a plumber and certified gasfitter to check his house after the gas leak.

They cut a series of holes along the gas lines in the wall and ceiling looking for damage before finding a section of RWC-manufactured multi-layer pipe that had been chewed through by rats, Blue claimed.

He contacted RWC about the damage but was unhappy with their response because they did not accept responsibility, instead ruling the leak as being caused by an “act of nature”, he said.

He also replaced all the pipes with copper piping and used a pest controller to eliminate the rats.

Rodents gnawing on gas pipes can pose several serious threats, including:

  1. Gas leaks: The main danger of rodents gnawing on gas pipes is that they can create small holes or cracks in the pipes that can cause gas leaks. Natural gas is highly flammable and can pose a serious fire hazard if it accumulates in an enclosed space.
  2. Carbon monoxide poisoning: Rodents can also cause damage to gas pipes that can result in carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is poisonous to humans and animals in high concentrations.
  3. Property damage: In addition to the health and safety risks, rodents can cause significant damage to gas pipes and other structures. Gnawing on gas pipes can cause them to weaken and eventually fail, which can lead to expensive repairs and property damage.
  4. Increased energy costs: Rodent damage to gas pipes can also cause energy costs to increase. Leaks can cause natural gas to escape, which can result in higher gas bills.
  5. Pest infestations: Finally, rodents gnawing on gas pipes can attract other pests, such as insects and other rodents, to your property. These pests can cause additional damage and pose health risks of their own.

Regardless of the reason why rats gnaw on gas pipes, it is important to take steps to prevent damage to your gas pipes and to control rodent populations around your property. This can help to prevent gas leaks and other potentially dangerous situations.

When Pests Invade: The Serious Threat of Infestations in Hospital

Pest infestation in hospitals is a serious issue that can compromise the health and safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Pests such as rodents, insects, and birds can carry diseases and contaminate surfaces and equipment, which can lead to the spread of infections.

Hospitals should have a pest control program in place to prevent and manage infestations. This program should include regular inspections, monitoring, and sanitation practices to eliminate pest habitats and food sources. In addition, hospitals should work with licensed pest control professionals who can use safe and effective methods to control pests while minimizing the risks to patients and staff.

Preventative measures that hospitals can take to reduce the risk of pest infestation include:

  1. Maintaining a clean and sanitary environment, including regular cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and equipment.
  2. Properly storing and disposing of food and waste.
  3. Sealing cracks and gaps in walls, floors, and ceilings to prevent pests from entering.
  4. Using screens on windows and doors to keep out flying insects.
  5. Proper measures to prevent bird infestation
Rats Nibble At Patients At Bengal Govt Hospital, Video Goes Viral

16th February, 2023

In the viral video, rats can be seen nibbling at patients lying on the floor of a Government-run hospital in West Bengal’s Malda.

The shocking reality of West Bengal’s healthcare came to light in a video accessed by Republic Bangla. In the video, rats can be seen nibbling at patients lying on the floor of a Government-run hospital. Patients can be seen on the floor of the Malda hospital and rats seem to have infested the entire ward. The video is believed to be from Wednesday.

On being questioned about the presence of rats at the hospital, superintendent Puranjay Saha told Republic Bangla that rats are going to be everywhere. When reporters said rats are riding up patients, he said: “I will ask the assistant super and see what can be done. We do run a pest control programme. I have to ask around.” He added that the hospital has taken measures to control rodents and pests.

Cockroach found in 4-year-old patient’s meal at AIIMS, hospital initiates probe

Published on Nov 15, 2022

The alleged incident occurred on Sunday, after the child, who suffers from Hirschsprung disease — a condition that affects the large intestine and causes problems with passing stool — was served a meal after he was operated upon

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has found itself in the middle of another controversy involving the quality of meals being served at the institute after the family of a four-year-old patient allegedly found a cockroach in a meal served to the child.

The alleged incident occurred on Sunday, after the child, who suffers from Hirschsprung disease — a condition that affects the large intestine and causes problems with passing stool — was served a meal after he was operated upon.

“After the surgery, the doctors told us to give him only semi-solid food. So I asked the staff to give me a bowl of dal. When I gave him the first bite, I found parts of a dead cockroach in it. I made my son spit out the bite immediately,” said the child’s mother, a Noida resident who wished to remain anonymous.

“I am grateful to the doctors here because they have been there for us for the last two years, but food safety is a big concern. I panicked and alerted the hospital authorities and they assured me that they will take the strictest action in the case,” the mother said.

Responding to allegations, the AIIMS administration said, “Hospital authorities have taken a serious note of the incident and are investigating the matter.”

This is not the first time that there has been a complaint about the sub-standard quality of food being served at AIIMS.

Between August and September, two separate incidents occurred where poor quality of food was served in the resident doctors’ canteens of the institute. After complaints were circulated on social media, teams from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted inspections and several samples failed the safety test.

Following the FSSAI tests, the AIIMS administration had directed the closure of a resident doctors’ hostel mess and a cafeteria.

In the event of a pest infestation, hospitals should take immediate action to address the problem. Commonly used pest control measures may include using traps, baits, or insecticides to control the pests, as well as implementing structural modifications to prevent future infestations. But how viable are they? And more importantly how safe are they?

It is important for hospitals to take pest infestations seriously and to have a plan in place to prevent and address them. By following best practices for pest control and working with licensed professionals, hospitals can ensure a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

So is there such a solution available?

Yes, C Tech Corporation’s RodrepelTM is the best solution to keep rodents away from the hospital and hence from human contact. Another product, TermirepelTM is an insect aversive repellent while Combirepel™ is all in one, rodent, insect and bird aversive repellent.

RodrepelTM is a low-toxic, non-hazardous, and rodent aversive. This product works on the mechanism of repellency. It does not harm or kill the target species but generate fear or trigger temporary discomfort within the pests that keep the pests away from the application. The unpleasant experience with the product is imprinted within an animal’s memory and passed on its progeny.

TermirepelTM is made with a mechanism such that, the product temporarily blocks the mating cycle of these insects and causes feeding disruption by creating discomfort within the insects. The product weakens the ability of insects to reproduce which means, female insects will not lay eggs and laid eggs will be infertile. The product disturbs the release of vital hormones which are essential for insects to grow.

These products are available as liquid concentrate, lacquer, masterbatch, aerosol sprays, etc. The liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied on the interior and exterior of hospitals. The product is safe for use in the patient’s room and operation theatres. The product can be used in the medicine storage areas to keep the pests out of these places. The kitchen and pantry can be painted using this product. The laundry area is dreaded with pests as well where this product can be applied.

The product available in lacquer form is a direct application product. The lacquer can be applied to the furniture and other wooden accessories used in hospitals. It can be applied to already installed wires and cables, polymeric utility pipes, and equipment used in hospitals. The product is compatible with most of the surfaces like metal, wood, concrete, polymer, ceramic, etc.

The product available in the form of masterbatch can be incorporated into the polymeric applications like wires and cables, pipes, equipment, and accessories from hospitals while they are manufactured.

The ready to use spray is an easy to use product, it is an aerosol spray that can be sprayed on infested areas, or areas susceptible to infestations in order to prevent pests from entering.

The product is compliant with RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, APVMA, NEA, BPR, and FIFRA exempted.

Rats, Mice, and Squirrels: How to Handle Rodent Damage to Your Car

Rodents such as mice, rats, and squirrels can cause significant damage to vehicles. They can chew through wiring and other components, causing expensive repairs and even safety hazards. In this blog, we’ll discuss some of the ways rodents can damage vehicles and what you can do to prevent it.

Why Do Rodents Chew on Cars?

Rodents have a natural instinct to gnaw on things to keep their teeth trimmed and to find nesting materials. Unfortunately, cars provide an ideal environment for them to do both. The engine compartment, for example, is warm and sheltered, and there are plenty of materials like wiring and insulation for rodents to chew on.

What Damage Can Rodents Cause?

Rodents can cause a wide range of damage to vehicles. Here are some of the most common types of damage:

  1. Chewed wiring: Rodents may chew through the wires in a car’s engine compartment, causing electrical problems and potentially even a fire.
  2. Damaged insulation: Rodents may chew through the insulation in a car’s engine compartment or undercarriage, causing heat loss and potential rust or corrosion.
  3. Interior damage: Rodents may also chew on the interior of a car, damaging seat cushions and other materials.
  4. Contamination: Rodents can leave droppings and urine in a car, which can cause unpleasant odors and potentially spread disease.

Man says vintage car, family heirlooms damaged by rats at storage facility

By Colin Stanton,  Gary Harper and Jordan Gartner

Published: Feb. 17, 2023

PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) – An Arizona man says rats damaged his vintage sports car and family heirlooms at a storage facility.

Mike Vestal told KPHO that he rented a storage unit to house his vintage sports car, a 1966 Austin Healey Sprite, and some family heirlooms. But when rats moved in, he ended up with a tough lesson on the need for insurance.

“They love cars,” he said. “They love to nest in them, and they love eating up wiring harnesses. You know, they eat off the insulation, the casing.”

Vestal said he reported the rats to management at Extra Space Storage. In turn, they called in an exterminator, but it reportedly didn’t help.

According to Vestal, he had to put out rat traps, but the rodents had already done serious damage to his car. He says his car’s wiring was badly damaged, and the carpet along the floorboards had to be thrown away.

Vestal estimated the damage to his car at $10,000, and that’s not all.

“I have my grandmother’s quilts that I’m keeping,” he said. “Once that’s damaged with an infestation, you’ve got to throw it away. You’ve got to get rid of it.”

Vestal said that many of his belongings had to be tossed out. The total damage is more than $16,000.

Hoping to be reimbursed, he filed a claim with Extra Space Storage.

“And their first response to that was we’re not seeing any signs of rodent infestation or damage whatsoever,” he said. “So, I’m still dealing with that; we’ll see where it goes.”

So, this problem is with every car, from Mercedes to Tesla, every car has a rodent issue. And the insurance companies somehow don’t cover this issue under claims.

How to Prevent Rodent Damage to Your Vehicle?

Although there are many types of rodent deterrents available, such as peppermint oil, mothballs, and ultrasonic devices. These have proven to be ineffective at keeping rodents away.

Car manufacturers have even used capsaicin and nontoxic soy based repellents in the polymeric parts to keep the rodents away, but capsaicin is toxic, plus rodents are not repelled by it. Soy based repellents though nontoxic have been enjoyed by rodents and they seem to relish on soy based wirings thereby proving ineffective again.

So is there even a solution available in the market that can help us keep the rodents away from our cars?

Well, the solution available with C Tech Corporation to this nuisance is a one-time solution and the need of the hour for the automobile industry. Our products are a blend of green chemistry and smart technology.

The product available in the form of solid masterbatch can be incorporated into polymeric applications like wires and cables, pipes, oil filters, polymeric switch panels, components of ignition boxes, fuel tanks, fuel hoses, foam seats, airbags, tires, and other polymeric components from cars while they are manufactured. Thus, making the end application rodent resistant.

The product available as liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied to the interior and exterior of cars. It can be applied over the bonnet, bumper, doors, trunks, etc. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all kinds of paints and solvents.

The already installed cables, electric junction boxes, cable carriers, polymeric hoses, fuel tanks, battery boxes, ducts, etc. from the cars can be coated with our lacquer to protect them from the pests gnawing at these applications and thus preventing car accidents. The lacquer is a transparent product and it does not wear off easily.

The Rodrepel™ Rodent Repellent Spray is specially designed for cars. The product can be sprayed on the car components after clearing the dust and waste from the components. The Growing Threat of Super Rat Invasions

Super rats, also known as resistant rats, are a growing concern for many communities around the world. These rats have developed a resistance to commonly used rat poisons, making it more difficult to control their populations and prevent the spread of diseases.

The problem of super rats can be traced back to the overuse of the same type of poison, leading to natural selection and the survival of only the most resistant individuals. This has resulted in a growing population of rats that are nearly impossible to eradicate.

The dangers posed by super rats are numerous. They can carry and transmit a number of diseases to humans, including Salmonella, Leptospirosis, and Hantavirus. They can also cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure by gnawing on electrical wires and other materials. Furthermore, they can contaminate food and water supplies with their urine, faeces, and hair, potentially leading to food poisoning and the spread of diseases.

The control and elimination of super rat populations can also be expensive, and the damage caused by these pests can result in significant economic losses for businesses and individuals. In addition, their populations can have a negative impact on local ecosystems and wildlife by consuming and competing for food and resources.

So, what can be done to prevent super rat invasions and control their populations?

  1. Use non-toxic control methods: Instead of relying on poison, trapping, and other such conventional methods, nontoxic products can be used to control rat populations.
  2. Proper storage and disposal of waste: Rats are attracted to sources of food and shelter, so proper storage and disposal of waste can help reduce their populations.
  3. Seal entry points: Rats can enter buildings through small cracks and gaps, so it is important to seal these entry points to prevent their intrusion.
  4. Seek professional extermination: In some cases, it may be necessary to seek the assistance of a professional exterminator who can effectively control rat populations and prevent the spread of diseases.
Warning over new breed of super rodents feared to be ‘threat to humans’

Nearly all rats and mice in the UK have become resistant to a common type of poison and pest experts are concerned

By Emer Scully

7 Jan 2023

A new breed of ‘super rodents ‘ could be a danger to health, say experts.

In the last 20 years, almost all of the mice and rats in the UK have evolved to be resistant to a common type of poison.

Some 78% of rats and 95% of house mice now have genes that mean they can tolerate poisons known as anticoagulant rodenticides. These normally kill them by preventing blood clotting.

Scientists who have spent 20 years studying rats and mice found the same gene in creatures all over the country.

Pest expert Dr Alan Buckle said the development may be a “threat to human and animal health”.

He added: “Continued use of anticoagulant rodenticides against resistant rats or mice has serious downsides.

Currently, the UK is home to around five million mice and eight million rats.

The largest common mouse, the yellow neck, can grow up to 4in long, while the biggest brown rats can measure almost 16in.

Two-foot-long ‘poison-immune’ mutant rats attack British homes

Giant, two-foot-long rats that are immune to poison and are infiltrating homes in Britain, reported The Sun.

(Representative) A viral image of a man in the UK holding a giant rat somewhere in Topsham Road Tooting, 2021.—  Stephen Joseph Brown/Facebook

The culture of working from home is regarded to be the cause of the issue, which prevents businesses and households from missing trash pickups.

Refuse haulers are unable to pass the steadily extending queues of parked automobiles outside of residences because people stay at home throughout the week.

As disease-carrying rats and scavenger seagulls are drawn to trash cans overflowing with rotting waste, worries that it will pose a health risk are mounting.

Leeds City Council has attributed an increase in complaints about missed rubbish collections to the work-from-home culture.

“It’s the most annoying thing when you pay your council tax and then you come home and your bin hasn’t been collected,” Conservative councillor Paul Wadsworth was quoted as saying by The Sun.

Rats are attempting to enter homes through breaches in exterior walls, drainpipes, and lofts, according to pest control experts, which are receiving an increased number of complaints from homeowners.

As many as 200 million rats are thought to be swarming over Britain at this time. If trash cans aren’t emptied, people who work from home can discover a rat lounging in the kitchen or bedroom.

Rats can swim, therefore they might even try to go into sewers and appear when the toilet lid is removed.

Many are alleged to be monster mutants up to 2 feet long that are resistant to counter poisons and pose a severe threat to public health because they are known to transmit fatal diseases.

The rainy weather is flooding parks, fields, and gardens, forcing rats out of their tunnels and underground “dungeon” nests. They are swarming toward centrally heated homes, looking for crevices through which they may gain inside.

Rats, which can fit through openings as small as half an inch wide, have more than a dozen possible entry sites inside a normal home, according to the British Pest Control Association.

“The first evidence of rats in a home is often noises under the floor, in the walls or loft as that’s where most will head to once they’re inside,” the outlet quoted a spokesperson.

“Quite apart from the health risks, they’ll foul water tanks and chew on wood or electrical wires which can cause a lot of damage and poses a hazard risk.”

She said that people should do all they can to protect their houses because the creatures will try to find places to hide from the icy winds.

The rats appear to have undergone genetic changes that have made them bigger, stronger, and increasingly resistant to both. In order to address the expanding issue, pest controllers are now pleading for the approval of a third generation of far stronger poison.

According to genetic analysis performed by Huddersfield University, the rats have a mutation that enables them to resist common toxins.

Since the 1950s, the country has been fighting rats with the same anticoagulant poisons, despite the fact that they have evolved. Researchers predict that super rats may eventually outnumber humans in Britain three to one, which is horrifying.

However, because of the risks to children, pets, and wildlife, rodent poisons are debatable.

So, the growing threat of super rat invasions highlights the importance of effective and sustainable measures to control rat populations and prevent the spread of diseases. It is important to use control methods that are safe for both humans and the environment, and to follow all relevant regulations and guidelines. With the right approach, we can protect our communities from the dangers posed by super rats and prevent future invasions.

C Tech Corporation has been able to come up with a solution that is not only effective but also 100% eco-friendly, green and sustainable. All products manufactured by C Tech Corporation are environment-friendly and a blend of green chemistry and smart technology.

The product Rodrepel™ is an extremely low toxic, low hazard rodent aversive. This product acts through series of a highly developed intricate mechanisms ensuring that rodents are kept away from the target application. The eco-friendly products do not kill the target species but only repel them.

The product triggers a fear response in rodents thus protecting the application. It causes severe temporary distress to the mucous membrane of the rodents due to which the pest stays away from the application. The product triggers an unpleasant reaction in case if the pest tries to gnaw away the application. After encountering the above-mentioned emotions, the animal instinctively perceives it as something it should stay away from and stores this information for future reference. The fact that certain rodents are repelled is mimicked by other rodents as well. Thus, the other rodents too stay away from the applications. The unpleasant experience is imprinted within the animal’s memory and passed on to its progeny.

Rodrepel™ is available in the form of a solid masterbatch, liquid concentrate, lacquer, wood polish additive, and spray.

The masterbatch can be incorporated into polymeric applications like wires and cables, pipes, agriculture films, polymeric equipment, etc. during their manufacturing, thereby making the end applications rodent resistant.

The product available in the form of liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied over the interior and exterior of the house, garages, around the garden fences, warehouses, etc. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all kinds of paints and solvents.

The already installed cables, pipes, and other applications can be coated with our lacquer to protect them from the rodents gnawing on this application and thus preventing the damage. The lacquer is a transparent product and it does not wear off easily.

The wood polish additive can be blended with wood polish and applied to wooden articles and furniture.

The Rodrepel™ spray is easy to use and can be sprayed on the infested area to repel the rodents and prevent them from entering the premises.

By using these products, you can get an effective and long-lasting solution against rodent nuisance. By conditioning the rodents to stay away from applications treated with these products, the problem of recurring infestation is solved. This makes the solution extremely effective and pocket-friendly in the long run.

Rodrepel™ does not volatilize and does not degrade the soil. It is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, EU – BPR, REACH, APVMA, NEA compliant and FIFRA exempted.
