In 2007, Mazda announced the development of a new fabric made entirely from plant fibres. Seat covers, instrument panel, door trim, and other interior fittings were to be manufactured using the same.

Toyota:

They make seat cushion material, radiator tanks and other components from bioplastics that use glycol from renewable sugar cane instead of petroleum-derived glycol.

Mercedes-Benz:

It uses recycled plastics in various components including wheel well liners, bumpers, air and water baffles; material from renewable natural fibres used in different components including interior trim pieces.

Biobased materials are used in the manufacturing of the automotive parts because they provide biodegradability due to the renewable nature of the source materials and they can be recycled. But as every coin has two sides this application also has drawbacks.

He said the rodents can even travel through vents and into the dashboard. “The last case we had on a Ranger, the guy drove it every day and it took just one night for this to happen, and it was close to $2,500 worth of damage,” Fellers said.

Rats take up residence in Gold Coast car engines, cause damage in the thousands of dollars

Never mind snakes on a plane; it’s rats in cars you have to be worried about.

Rats on the Gold Coast have been wreaking havoc and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to vehicles.

Palm Beach mechanic Glenn Joyce said it was not uncommon to see rats that have been nesting in cars during this time of year.

“For some strange reason they like chewing on the rubber components of your vehicle; hoses, the insulation around your wiring,” he said.

The damage bill in the thousands

Mr Joyce said the result of rats nesting in a person’s vehicle was an expensive problem to fix.

“In most cases people will see an immediate cost of hundreds of dollars of damage,” he said.

“But in extreme cases it can be thousands of dollars of damage.”

Mr Joyce says said cars that have an infestation of rats will likely have any rubber in the engine chewed out.

Broadhead, who lives in Ottawa, says the rodents have made a series of targeted strikes on his air-filters, motors and fuel injector wiring, with repair costs eating away about $1,000 of his savings.

“Rats everywhere!” cried the headline on a recent Nextdoor post, followed by nearly 100 frustrated-sounding homeowner responses. These days, seems like everyone has a rat story. Like a close neighbor abandoning her home after being repeatedly bitten by rat mites and another who got hit with $5,000 in car damage from rats chewing through electrical wires. That’s in addition to the common complaints of disappearing bird or pet food, holes in tomatoes and citrus, and droppings in the garage.

So, what’s up? The global pandemic and lockdown has created a perfect environment for rats to flourish; the vacant roads and empty restaurants and offices has provided them enough space to roam around and has also caused them gnaw and damage things out of starvation.

“Rodents are everywhere and they are opportunists,” says Rachel Long, a UC cooperative extension adviser. “They move in from their surrounding urban habitats to take advantage of any food source they can find. And once that food source disappears they search for food elsewhere.”

In addition to carrying fleas and rat mites that may bite humans and domestic animals, rats transmit serious diseases like murine typhus, salmonellosis and rat-bite fever. Humans can contract these diseases via water or food (think your fruit and vegetable gardens) that has been contaminated by rat feces or urine.

How can you keep rats from becoming a problem? Prevention.

• Begin by cleaning up. Harvest or pick up fruit, nuts and vegetables as they ripen; feed your pets during daylight and remove uneaten food right away. Keep garbage and recycling cans covered, and store bulk foods, bird seed and dry pet food in rat-proof, covered metal containers.

• Take away their home. Remove garden debris, trim trees, shrubs and vines so they are at least 4 feet away from roofs and utility poles; thin heavy vegetation from around buildings or fences to eliminate hiding places.

• Keep them out — seal openings the size of a dime or larger using rodent-proof materials where pipes, cables and wires enter walls and foundations. Weather-strip front, side and garage doors so they close tightly and repair damaged ventilation screens.

• Encourage a natural method of rodent control — provide a safe habitat for raptors. These birds of prey — hawks, falcons and owls — are voracious; a family of barn owls can consume about 3,000 rodents each year. Barn owls are especially beneficial as they’re nocturnal hunters, out when many rats are doing their damage. Rodenticides, poisons that kill rodents, are a major threat to rodent-eating predators. After ingesting poisoned bait, rats go back to the wild, taking up to a week to die. Any predator that eats the tainted rat may be seriously injured or die; the effect is multiplied when a raptor parent feeds the poisoned animal to its young.

Data collected by WildCare, the San Rafael wildlife rehabilitation and nature education center, indicates that 76 percent of all animals brought to its wildlife hospital from 2006 to 2017 showed some level of rodenticide in their blood, even animals not suspected of exposure to the poisons. If you want to attract barn owls with a nesting box, don’t do it if you know your neighbors are using rodenticides.

The universal early symptoms of these diseases include fatigue, fever and muscle aches in the thighs, hips, back and sometimes shoulders.

All the patients with these diseases experience symptoms like headaches, dizziness, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. As the virus turns deadly, the fluid fills the lungs, causing coughing and shortness of breath where a person may even die.

Scientists believe that people can get the virus if they touch something which is contaminated with the rats infected urine, droppings or saliva, and then touch their nose or mouth.

Since these viruses can occur during any month and the risk of exposure is increased in all seasons.

The hantavirus is spread through exposure to infected rodent droppings, typically from deer mice, which are found across the country and are responsible for most cases of infection in the United States and Canada.

The engine died immediately after Tess Klingenstein turned the key in her Honda Fit on a mild January day. When she tried again, she said, “every single alert light” flashed. The car was fairly new, so she was surprised. The mechanic who looked under the hood a few days later was not.

“ ‘You’ve had rats,’ ” Klingenstein, a speech-language pathologist in Washington, said he told her. The rodents had chewed wiring and defecated in air filters, causing $300 in damage. “He said I had gotten off lucky.”

Very lucky. Rats, better known for inhabiting sewers and dumpsters, also love to settle in the innards of vehicles in cooler months. The warmth and shelter attract them, but it’s the wires and hoses that entertain them: Rats’ teeth grow constantly, and they gnaw on things to keep their teeth trim. Inside an engine bay, they can blow fuses, start fires and even total cars.

Class-Action Lawsuits: Car Wires Attract Rodents, Cause Thousands in Damage

A class-action lawsuit was filed this week on behalf of thousands of Toyota owners who say rodents are eating car wires coated with soy-based materials, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

“Toyota incorporates soy- or bio-based ingredients in the wiring that bait rodents – including rats, squirrels and other animals,” the lawsuit says. Honda is facing a similar suit.

In an effort to reduce waste, some car manufacturers wrap wires in a soy-based material.

Rupert Welch of Falls Church, Virginia, was surprised to learn what caused his car trouble three times over the course of a few weeks. Rodents had a feast at his expense, causing $10,000 in damage.

“I took the car back, but the next day all the lights went on, and the car wouldn’t start, and I had to call a tow truck,” Welch said.

Some car owners want the auto manufacturers to foot the bill for the repairs.

Juan Recacarren has been fixing cars in his Richmond garage for more than 20 years, but in all that time he hadn’t seen the scale of damage rats could cause — until this spring.

The owner of a Porsche Panamera had stored his car in a garage over the winter — but when it didn’t start up in the spring, it was towed to Recacarren’s shop.

“We found lots of damage in the wiring and engine bay — there was a lot of damage in the suspension area, and some of the exhaust wiring,” said Recacarren. “Basically there was damage everywhere.”

The damage so extensive, the repair bill totaled $15,000.
