Hospitals riddled with rats

A hospital is a healthcare institution providing a patient with medical treatment. Hospital is a place expected to be with utmost hygiene. But with recent news, it is evident that these places are not properly looked upon and the hygiene at these places is totally ignored.

Pest menace in hospitals has become a common sight in most of the hospitals across the country. From rats biting patients in ICU and dead bodies in the mortuary to bed bug infestations and food contamination through dead insects, the complaints about pest menace in areas of hospitals are on the rise.

Because pests pose a number of health threats through the spread of bacteria and contamination of surfaces, medical supplies, and equipment, ensuring that the facility remains pest-free is one of the major precautions needed to be taken by the hospital authorities.

Rodents in hospitals are a common sight these days. Rodents can enter buildings through almost any opening or crack larger than a dime. Once inside, rodents can cause structural damage as they are able to chew through wallboards, cardboard, wood, and plaster and through electrical wiring, increasing the potential risk of fire. Additionally, rodents defecate constantly and can easily contaminate any and all food and food preparation surfaces.

Let us have a look at some news articles pertaining to rodent menace in hospitals,

Rats nibble off corpse’s nose in Tamil Nadu hospital mortuary

Chidambaram: Repeated incidents corpses being eaten by rats, cats and rodents are reported from government hospitals in Tamil Nadu. In a latest report, it was claimed that a corpse kept inside the mortuary was bitten off by a rat.

Now, a 22-year-old Vaitheeswaran had allegedly committed suicide and his mortal remains were brought to Kamaraj Government Hospital in Chidambaram for post mortem. The corpse was kept in the mortuary after the post mortem. When Vaitheeswaran’s friends arrived at the hospital to take the body, they were shocked to see that his nose was bitten off.

When informed about the same to the doctor, they inspected the freezer where Vaitheeswaran’s body was kept. There was a hole in the freezer, defeating the very purpose.

Just a month ago, at Coimbatore Medical College (government) Hospital, a video of cat nibbling woman’s corpse lying in the corner of the hospital ward had gone viral.

Infant dies of ‘rat bite’ in Bihar hospital

Amarnath Tewary; THE HINDU │October 30, 2018

A nine-day-old boy died on Tuesday at a government hospital in Darbhanga district of Bihar allegedly after being bitten by rats. The district administration has ordered a probe.

“When we reached the hospital early in the morning, no nurse or doctor was around… we found that rats had bitten the baby’s hands and legs at several places… we immediately informed the authorities who told us that the baby was dead,” Phuran Chaupal, the father told local journalists in Darbhanga.

The hospital authorities said when the baby was admitted he was in a serious condition. “We admit that the hospital is infested with rats which we cannot control but there were no signs of rat bites on the baby’s body”, said a doctor posted at the hospital.

SHOCKING Hospital Apathy: Dead Body Bitten By Rats In ICU

timesnownews.com │August 9, 2018

A family from Damua in Madhya Pradesh was shocked when they found out that their dead 70-year-old relative who was a patient at a hospital had rat bite marks on the left eye. The family claims that the rat has bitten the patient in the ICU.

To keep rodents away from hospitals many ineffective control measures are used traditionally. These methods include use of rat traps which do not work once mechanical damage is caused to them. The hospitals are fumigated, which is a most dangerous method of pest control. Glue boards are used that can be dangerous if a patient accidently sticks to it. Rat poisons are used which are potential of killing the rodents and spreading the death diseases.

In a place like hospital effective and eco-friendly measures are necessary to keep these pests at a bay.

Do rodents have a taste for cash?

Well, I know you might be wondering why would a rodent have taste for cash; not saying it the exact way but their habit of gnawing on things and keeping their teeth in check has caused a huge loss to the money in the ATM devices.

Rats Break Into ATM Machine During The Lockdown, Eat Up Money Worth $44,000

By Felix G,  April 14, 2020

https://i2.wp.com/www.ghgossip.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/93711500_114340333569362_3675988398985707520_n.jpg?fit=594%2C283&ssl=1

Some ATM technicians who arrived to fix a malfunctioning cash machine in the Indian state of Assam during the lockdown got a shock when they opened it up.

Notes worth more than 1.2m rupees ($44,000) had been shredded – and the suspected culprits are rats as reported by BBC.

According to a report by the police, the rodents probably entered the machine through a hole for wiring, the Hindustan Times reported.

Pictures of the chewed cash at the State Bank of India branch in Tinsukia district went viral on social media with one showing a dead rodent lying in the debris.

A similar news was reported in June 2018 where notes worth Rs 12 lakhs inside an ATM belonging to the State Bank of India (SBI) where destroyed by mice.

You know it’s going to be a severe economic downturn when ATMs are being closed because the rodents shred currency notes resulting in technical errors and thus the ATM is out of service.

The reason why rodents are such determined chewers is that they actually chew for survival. Like several other animals of the rodent family, they have characteristic strong incisors that grow all through their lives. The chewing habit is for them, a coping mechanism to file these incisors and keep them from growing out of hand – or mouth, so just like we clip our fingernails, a rat gnaws on things in order to keep its teeth in check. Overgrown teeth are a possible problem for them. They like any surface that they can gnaw on, let the surface be metal, polymer, concrete, wood, etc.

Using mechanical traps, rat baits, glue boards, fumigation is not the way to combat this nuisance.

We need something that keeps the rodents at bay.

The solution available with C Tech Corporation to this nuisance is a onetime solution and the need of the hour because you just cannot let the cash to be chewed up by the rodents. Our products are a blend of green chemistry and smart technology.

Our product Rodrepel™ is an extremely low toxic, non-hazardous rodent aversive. This product acts through a series of highly developed intricate mechanism ensuring that rodents are kept away from the target application. Our eco-friendly products do not kill the target species but only repel them. The product is compliant with RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, APVMA, NEA, BPR, and FIFRA exempted.

Our RodrepelTM rodent repellent spray can be applied in every part of the ATM and it is any easy to use product. It can be sprayed on the already installed wires and cable, devices, ceiling panels, and other pest infested areas.

The products are also available in the form of a solid masterbatch, liquid concentrate, and lacquer.

The product available in the form of solid masterbatch can be incorporated into the polymeric applications like wires and cables, cash withdrawal machines, etc. Thus, making the end application rodent resistant.

The product available in liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied to interior and exterior of the ATM. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all kinds of paints and solvents.

The already installed wires and cables from the ATM can be coated with our lacquer to protect them from the pests gnawing on these applications and thus preventing huge monetary loss. The lacquer is transparent product and it does not wear off easily.

By using our products, you can get an effective and long-lasting solution against pest nuisance.

You could thus contribute to us in using products which are eco-friendly thus causing no damage to the environment.

Pest management in areas of restaurants

Pest control methods are essential to ensure high standards of food hygiene and good manufacturing practice. In restaurants, rats and mice are one of the most common type of pest you might find.

Rodents are familiar pests in foodservice environments because their three basic needs – water, food and shelter – can all be met in a restaurant setting.  Rodents, like humans, like to be comfortable.  So when the weather gets colder, they want a warm haven.  Since rodents will eat most of the same foods that people do, your restaurant can be just as appealing to a Norway rat as it is to your customers, and with none of the advertisements and marketing!

As scraps from restaurant dumpsters start to dwindle amid widespread closures, the rats are going to do whatever is necessary to find food and survive. Whatever is necessary.

Insects like cockroaches and ants and other pantry pests will feed on the leftover food or even the groceries in the kitchen.

Chinese restaurant in Sligo Town forced to close over ‘rodent infestation’

The food safety inspector found ‘many black elongated rodent droppings’

By William Dunne Digital Journalist

9th April 2020

An Chinese restaurant in Ireland was forced to close after “evidence of rodent infestation” was spotted in a food storage area.

The food safety chiefs issued a closure order for China City in Sligo Town on March 2 after an inspection was carried out.

An inspector for the Food Safety Authority of Ireland made the decision on the basis that there is a “grave and immediate danger to public health” at the premises.

They said while evidence showed a pest control contractor had examined the premises, no previous reports had stated evidence of rodent infestation.

The HSE report said: “There was no adequate procedure to check the premises for evidence of rodents on a day to day basis.

“There was a pest control contractor employed and reports indicate that visits hod been carried out and reports state that there was no evidence of internal or external rodent infestation.”

It added: “On the date of inspection there was evidence of rodent infestation in the first floor store where chest freezers used to store food and some foodstuffs such as flour were stored.

How to prevent squirrels from causing power outages?

Electrical disruptions caused by squirrels are common and widespread and can involve the disruption of power grids. It has been supposed that the threat to the internet, infrastructure, and services posed by squirrels may exceed that posed by terrorists

A squirrel can disrupt a power system if its body becomes a current path between electrical conductors. Such incidents result in power outages and are not good for the squirrel either.

Squirrels damage electrical distribution facilities by tunneling, by chewing through electrical insulation, or by simultaneously coming into contact with two conductors at different electrical potentials.

Squirrels have four teeth in the front of their mouth that constantly grow throughout their lives. This ensures that their teeth don’t wear down to nubs from gnawing on nuts and other objects.

The Washington Post reported in 2015 that the squirrels cause anywhere from 10 to 20 % of all outages.

The small animals are responsible for up to 2/3rd of the power outages at some utilities.

Recent news reported are:

Squirrel Blamed for Cloquet Power Outage, Service Restored

February 28, 2020

Minnesota Power says a squirrel is to blame for an outage that affected thousands of homes and businesses in Cloquet for more than an hour Friday.

The outage began about 10:45, and up to 6,500 customers were affected at one point. Minnesota power says the squirrel got into a substation that serves the area.

Madison County squirrels caused 260 power outages in 2018

By Chris Joseph | December 18, 2018

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) – Squirrels are one of the biggest threats to the Valley’s electrical infrastructure.

Huntsville Utilities director of communications Joe Gehrdes said there were 260 power outages caused by squirrels, 54 caused by birds, and eight caused by “other wildlife” in 2018.

Gehrdes estimated there were 1,200 outages for the year in total, meaning animals (with 322 outages) made up roughly a fourth of the damage.

“Animals aren’t really a surprising nuisance for us, it’s just a fact of doing business in the electric industry,” he said.

Gehrdes said squirrels will climb up power poles and come in contact with two pieces of electric equipment. The squirrel’s body would then become a conductor for the energy, electrocuting the squirrel and damaging the components.

Squirrel causes power outage, traps people in elevators

By Ben Hooper │November 26, 2018

Nov. 26 (UPI) — A squirrel was blamed for a power outage in Virginia that left nearly 600 customers without power and trapped several people in elevators.

Appalachian Power said the outage, which began about 9:20 a.m. Monday, was caused when a squirrel came into contact with equipment at the 7th Street substation in Roanoke.

The incident knocked out power to nearly 600 customers and emergency workers said several people were subsequently rescued from elevators, including one person stranded near the sixth floor of a building.

All four front teeth of a squirrel never stop growing; if they did, they would be gnawed down to nothingness.

What can be the effective steps taking to keep them away from the applications.

C Tech Corporation can offer a solution to overcome the damage caused by squirrels. RodrepelTM  is an anti-rodent and animal aversive which is extremely low in toxicity and extremely low hazard, environmentally safe solution. It is engineered using a unique set of complex compounds. It follows 6 pronged strategies which are extremely effective on rodents like the squirrel, rat, beaver, gopher, marmot, etc.

RodrepelTM is available in the form of a masterbatch, liquid concentrate, lacquer, wood polish additives and sprays.

The masterbatch can be incorporated in cable sheathing. The product in the form of liquid concentrate can be diluted in Paints and organic solvents and applied to cables. The lacquer which is a topical application can be directly applied on the already installed wires and cables, cabinets and transformer boxes. The wood polish additives can be mixed with the wood polish and applied on wooden surfaces.

Our newly developed products,  Rodrepel™ Rodent Repellent Spray is an easy to use product which can be sprayed on wires and cables, electronic appliances, cabinets, so as to as avoid the rodents from entering them.

RodrepelTM  is cost-effective, inert, and thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It is RoHS, RoHS2, REACH, NEA, EU BPR, APVMA compliant and FIFRA exempted.

How to keep your restaurant rodent-free?

Rats in the restaurant? This is the worst nightmare for any Restaurateur. A report of an infestation in the news is a guarantee of closure and permanent loss of business. Even if you do everything right, such as having a licensed food handler, and have a dedicated staff that follows all the right food handling rules, just one sewer pipe break can cause an uncontrolled rat infestation. Just one rat sighting can seriously damage your restaurant’s business…

Rats do not pay attention to signs and doorways and cleanly mopped floors. Rats come and go according to rat needs.

Rats are notorious for chewing through anything in front of them. They have an excellent sense of smell and are attracted to places where there is food and water readily available, such as a food premise. Rats will easily gnaw through wood, plastic, some metals, and brick walls. Worse still, they have been known to chew through power cables, causing costly repairs and potential fire risks.

Gosport pub and restaurant closed for two days due to mice infestation

THE Cocked Hat in Gosport was closed after customers complained about rodents in the restaurant.

By Richard Lemmer

Monday, 3rd February 2020

The Greene King-owned pub, in Privett Road, was forced to call in a pest control firm on Thursday morning – after several mice had run across customers’ feet in the dining area last week, according to a member of staff.

The member of staff said the pub had a problem with mice over the last two years.

A spokesman from Greene King said: ‘We take our cleanliness and hygiene standards extremely seriously and once we become aware of this issue, we took immediate remedial action. The pests have now been eliminated from the building and the pub has now reopened.

Gosport Borough Council said it had not been contacted about the situation and that the pub had closed under its own volition, and not due to any order.

Customer complaint about rodents closes restaurant

Oxford City Council environmental health officers forced an Oxford restaurant to close after mouse droppings and flies were found in food service areas.

Following a customer complaint about My Sichuan, The Old School, Gloucester Green, officers from the Business Regulation team called to investigate on Monday 2 September. They found widespread evidence of active mouse infestation and heavy fly activity in the premises, which posed a significant risk of food contamination. A hygiene emergency prohibition notice was issued requiring immediate closure of the restaurant.

Following a hearing at Oxford Magistrates Court on Friday 6 September the court issued a formal closure order. The restaurant’s management was represented in court.

All of a sudden, a shut-down notice hampers your restaurant’s growth and also the reputation within a county gets lowered. This is all because of the tiny pests called RODENTS.

Protect your cars from hungry rats

As a car owner, we are probably aware of the risks such as accidents and other threats. Have we ever thought of the threat and the risk a tiny rodent can pose in our vehicle though they don’t just damage your home when an infestation happens, they can cause serious damage to your vehicle too? The biggest threat to our vehicle concerning rats is the wiring. Thus, sometimes it can be expensive and complicated to repair the wiring that can be damaged by a rat infestation.

Rodents can cause considerable damage in many places, and that includes damage to electrical wires and cables. Rodents use their sharp incisors to gnaw food, they sometimes chew on things like wood or ducts, but they also chew on electric cables and wires.

The fact about all rodents is that they have incisors that never stop growing. They gnaw continuously to keep their choppers in check. Otherwise, their teeth would grow to such an impractical length that they would starve and die.

Rodents build their nests in large electrical appliances, under the bonnet, car engines and chewing on or through insulation and wiring, which can cause the appliance to short circuit, or lead to the risk of fire.

Rats also cause problems by biting the electrical wiring in cars, trucks, and trailers. The damage can sometimes be very difficult to locate, resulting in large repair bills!

A recent news reported for such a damage is as below:

Bengaluru: Rodents nibble away at vehicle wiring

TNN | January 14, 2020

BENGALURU: It’s not just traffic that gets motorists exasperated in Bengaluru. Rodent menace is turning out to be a major headache too. A rising number of motorists are thronging workshops with complaints of rats chewing or damaging wiring harness of vehicles, particularly cars.

Many take to online automobile forums to vent their anger over this nuisance. The most affected are those who leave behind their vehicles on trash-strewn streets due to lack of parking space. “I was planning a trip from Bengaluru to Ernakulam but there was some problem with my vehicle’s ignition. On opening the bonnet, I realised rodents had damaged some wiring.

The mechanic, too, said he is getting several such cases,” said Ramesh P, a resident of Indiranagar.

“There are several instances of supply wires to the fuel pump being eaten up by rodents. This problem is rampant across the city and rats often chew essential wiring of vehicles. Engine wires are primarily vulnerable. Sometimes rodents chew insulation covering the wires and this leads to short circuits,” said Vijay Kumar, a mechanic in Kengeri. He claims to be receiving an average of 10 cars with gnawed wires every month. At times, the cost of fixing such damages runs up to Rs 6,000.

Rodrepel, Termirepel and Combirepel™- the range of non-toxic and non-hazardous anti rodent and anti-termite/insect additive masterbatches, developed by C Tech Corporation, India have been evaluated in various polymeric applications. These products are compliant with RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, EU BPR, NEA, REACH and are FIFRA exempted. These products act through a series of highly developed intricate mechanisms ensuring that insects and rodents are kept away from the target application.

These products are environment-friendly implying that they do not leach out of the polymer matrix besides exercising their basic function of keeping the target species away.  They are effective in low dosages, have low vapor pressure – thus posing no problems of fumes in the air, and they have a long-life action depending upon the application. These products are available in the form of polymeric masterbatches compatible with all the kinds of thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers. The masterbatches can also be customized depending upon the target, application, and region.

These products are available in the form of ready to use lacquer that can be applied as a coating inside or on the surface of the automobiles. Also, these products in liquid form can be incorporated in paints and used in the automobile industry.

The newly developed product in the form of spray is a must-have product for every car owner! The Rodrepel™ Rodent Repellent Spray is specially designed for cars. The product can be sprayed on the car components after clearing the dust and waste from the components. The product when applied properly repels the rodents and protects the cars from rodent damage.

RodrepelTM  works on the mechanism of repellence. It does not kill target species but only repels them.

It is high time we take effective and stringent measures for protecting our automobiles from these vile creatures!

The power behind your power outages

What’s the biggest danger to the power grid? Hackers? Terrorists? Er, squirrels.

You’ve probably noticed, squirrels seem to be everywhere. The critters can also hit close to home, knocking out power.

Recent news reported states that squirrels are responsible for 14 percent of Huntsville Utilities outages in 2019 where among the total 2,884 total outages through mid-December, squirrels were responsible for 207 of them.

One might wonder the need for these notorious mammals being so interested in closely exploring the cables, even when these cables don’t suit their palate? The answer is simple; Most of the time squirrels gnaw to fulfill a portion of their dietary habits – opening hard-shelled nuts. If, however, squirrels do not have an adequate dietary reason or opportunity to exercise their incisors, there is a danger of the teeth “overgrowing”. In these cases, the incisors can prevent the squirrel’s mouth from closing (severely restricting its ability to eat), or the teeth may actually cause injury to the animal, including puncturing the roof of the mouth. If squirrels have need of wearing down their incisors, and there are no other hard substances nearby, they will gnaw on cable. Cable components such as polyethylene and aluminum shielding handily meet the needs of squirrels in the neighborhood when it comes to oral maintenance.

Wildlife, branches and equipment failures are among the causes of what appears to be a higher-than-normal number of power outages in New Westminster in 2019.

Statistics provided to the Record by the city’s electrical utility indicate there were 35 outages between Jan. 4 and Nov. 22, including some on the same day.

New Westminster, which operates its own electrical utility, is a city that’s long prided itself on having fewer power outages than other municipalities.

How to winterize your house to keep the rats out

As one of the world’s most common household pests, keeping rats out of your home is a year-round job. However, dropping temperatures means outdoor food and water sources become scarcer during the winter month, so rats are more likely to seek food and shelter indoors at this time of year. And since rats breed quickly, an infestation can present a serious health hazard to anyone living nearby.

On top of that, recent news have surfaced of a possible surge in rats invading people’s homes this winter season. According to The Sun, up to 120 million rats might seek shelter in people’s homes in the UK. While The National Pest Management Association reports that each winter around 21 million homes in the US are invaded by rodents and that rodents are the biggest pest concern in America right now. Therefore, you should really think about winterizing your home against rats and mice.

After all, it’s the best way to prevent a potentially costly problem, as this can stop rats from getting into your house in the first place. So, read on for the most effective preventative steps for winterizing your house against rats, so you can stay pest-free in winter and throughout the year.

Top tips for winterizing your house against rodents

Block off entry points

The first thing you can do to keep rats out of your house is to limit their options for entry. This means blocking up all holes, gaps, and cracks in the exterior of your house, no matter how small!

Pay attention to the gaps around windows, under doors and around pipes and drains in particular. When you find holes, seal them up with caulk or wire mesh, and install screens and sweeps on windows and doors to stop rats getting in.

Use a rat repellent

Rat repellent products can be applied to surfaces around your home to keep rodents away. The chemicals used in RodrepelTM products are completely safe and non-toxic. They work by driving rats away from treated areas and dissuading them from coming near your house.

Available in the form of sprays, lacquers, liquid concentrates, masterbatches and wood polish, RodrepelTM can be applied to floors, wire skirting boards, and around possible rat entry points. This can effectively protect your home from invasion and also prevent rats from chewing through wires and cables in your house. As a non-toxic formulation, these products are safe to use in the home and will have no adverse effects on humans or pets.

Lay out non-toxic rat monitoring baits

Non-toxic rat monitoring baits are an effective preventative tool against rats, as they can act as your first warning sign that there are rodents near or inside your house.

Set up these rat biomarkers around entry and harborage points (such as near garbage cans, pipes, behind kitchen appliances and in cupboards) and then check these spots regularly. If you see either biofluorescent or red or pink-colored rat droppings (depending on which type of biomonitoring baits you use) you will be sure that a rat infestation is taking place and will be able to act immediately.

Keep your kitchen clean and your garbage under control

Outdoor food sources can become scarce during winter, so your pantry can easily lure rats indoors. Food waste, dirty utensils, improperly stored food and overflowing garbage can all bring hoards of rats indoors. Therefore, keeping your kitchen clean and your waste organized is a big part of winterizing your home against rodents.

Make sure all food mess and spills are cleaned up immediately, store food in the refrigerator or in sealed, airtight containers and make sure you take out the trash regularly. Kitchen waste should be disposed of outside daily, ideally in rat-proof garbage containers kept at least 10-20 feet from the house.

Clear away outdoor clutter

Shrubs, long grass, garbage cans, recycling, old furniture and firewood stacks are all common harborage sites for rats. If you have a lot of clutter around the outside of your house this can encourage rodents to nest nearby, raising the risk of them finding their way indoors.

Prune your plants, clear away any disused furniture and boxes and store garbage and firewood at 10-20 feet from your house to keep rats at a safe distance.š

Conclusion

Winter is the time of year when your house is most vulnerable to attack from pests, and rats are one of the biggest home invaders. These common pests often come indoors in search of food and water, especially when outdoor temperatures are low, and conditions are hostile. Fortunately, protecting your home from rats is easily done if you take the proper preventative steps.

Sealing up entry points, setting up monitoring baits, laying out rat repellents and staying on top of your kitchen cleaning and waste are all effective measures against rat invasion. Winterize your home against rodents before the cold weather kicks in to reduce your chances of a rat infestation this winter.

STOP BEING A RODENT’S LANDLORD!!

That furry little blur you just saw zip across in front of your farm?  Those brown, rice-shaped droppings behind the stored grains?  O.K, how much trouble can a couple of rodents be?

The problem with rodents and insects/termites sharing the crop harvest is probably as old as the culture of agriculture. Each rat on a farm will eat, spoil or damage approximate $25 worth of grain per year. So, stop being a rodent’s landlord!! Rodents and insects have been a problem on farms where food and nesting sites are plentiful. These pests consume and contaminate food destined for livestock and other animals, as well as humans. Rodents also serve as vectors or reservoirs of a variety of disease such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis and murine typhus that are transmittable to humans.

Taking food from our table

More than 90% of world’s rice is produced in Asia. Rodents and insect pests cause losses to production up to 5-10% per annum. In Asia alone, the rice loss every year caused by rodents could feed about 200 million people. Damage to crops in Africa and South America is equally dramatic.

Cotton farmers worry as rodents destroy their crops

D Vincent Arockiaraj | TNN | May 12, 2019

NAGAPATTINAM: Voracious rodents have raided hundreds of acres of cotton crops in Thirumarugal of Nagapattinam district, causing extensive damage to farmers who lamented the loss could amount to lakhs of rupees.

Worried farmers’ unions said that the rodents, if left uncontrolled, could wreak further havoc to their remaining crops, and requested to the agriculture department to extend a helping hand to curb the infestation and announce monetary help.

Farmers in Perunattrangudi, Thennamarakudi, Thirukannapuram, and Thiruchettangudi have raised cotton on 600 acres, with expectation of high yield and better profit. This time, however, their hopes were dealt a crushing blow, after the rodents began raiding their lands.

Fall armyworm invades crops across Asia, small farmers worst hit

Reuters BAN NONG TOR | June 20, 2019

The Fall Armyworm, a deadly pest

Looking out at his empty, red-earth field, Thai farmer Puang Timdon said his two-week-old maize crop didn’t stand a chance against the fall armyworm pest.

“All the 8 rai (1.28 hectare) I planted were all heavily infested,” said the 42-year-old from his farm in Ban Nong Tor town in Pak Chong district, 180 km (120 miles) northeast of the capital Bangkok.“The worm ate the whole field in three days, leaving so much damage that it wasn’t worth saving.”

Fall armyworm, a caterpillar that got the name because it invades crop lands in droves, much like an army, has rapidly spread across Asia since it was detected in southern India late last year. Fields in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan have fallen victim. In Thailand, it has badly affected the country’s corn crop, much of which is sold to the animal feed industry.

TO INCREASE THE YEILD

Farmers worldwide are leaving no stone unturned to increase the yield of crops. The adaptability and agility of the pests make getting rid of them particularly impossible. Given the threats to the agricultural world from rodents and insects, farmers started using plastic agricultural films to increase the yield and at the same time, the films act as a barrier from pests. Agricultural films have been laid on a range of crops during or after planting as a way of retaining moisture and acting as a form of the greenhouse to improve plant growth. But it’s a proven fact that using agricultural films doesn’t solve the rodent/pests problem. Major constraints to banana production, a dietary staple for over 70 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are pest infestations and poor nutrition. Although mulch can improve soil water and nutrient status it also promotes the proliferation of banana weevil, one of the most serious banana pests. To protect crops from rodents and pests cases have been recorded where people have become so desperate that they have caused permanent environmental disruption where they have dynamited caverns, burnt down forests, adjacent to their fields or they have resorted to lethal rodent control devices that have killed humans or abandoned the otherwise productive area.

Currently, only toxic rodenticides are used which should be curbed as soon as possible. Being toxic in nature they come with a set of liabilities. Thus, there is a need for an innovative, eco-friendly and non-toxic solution to get rid of pests and rodents problems.

Do you have difficulty in finding a solution to pest’s problem on your farm?  Well, wait no more!  There is now a solution well developed to aid your needs in getting rid of rodents and pests in your fields.  Employing innovative masterbatch formulation techniques on agricultural films and focusing on environmental norms is the need of the hour. RodrepelTM, TermirepelTM, Combirepel™, are non-toxic and non-hazardous patented solutions developed by C Tech Corporation, has been successful in keeping away rodents, termites/insects from plastic materials in a non-toxic and non-hazardous way. These products do not kill pests but only repels them using its sensory mechanism. Our products are compliant with ROHS1, ROHS2, ROHS3, REACH and are FIFRA exempted. Unlike conventional pesticides, these products are developed in a special manufacturing process that provides high-temperature stability up to the highest polymer processing temperatures. Thus, RodrepelTM, TermirepelTM, Combirepel™ can be extruded on an extruder at elevated temperature making them ideal masterbatches suited for polymeric applications. The products act through a series of highly developed mechanisms that ensure insects and rodents are kept away from the target application. These product masterbatches are compatible with all types of thermosetting and thermoplastic polymer. The masterbatches can also be customized depending upon the target, application, region, and so on.

Oh, Rats! At the fire station

Rats and mice can be found in and around every town and farm in the country. It is estimated that there is one rat for every person living in the United States. Rodents have followed man to almost all parts of the world. They have no respect for social class; they are equal opportunity pests.

Man supplies their three basic needs: food, shelter, and water.

Rodents can be found in our homes, supermarkets, restaurants, livestock pens, and farm fields. Warehouses, grain mills, elevators, silos are especially vulnerable to rodent infestation. And even the fire stations!

Yes, you read it right.

There have been incidences documented for rat infesting a fire station.

Firefighters are known to run into harm’s way to protect the community and save lives, but in case of a rat infestation, they’re the ones in need of saving.

Rodents will eat anything man or his livestock eats. The rodents have two pairs of continuously growing incisors which must be kept sharp by gnawing. For their survival, they gnaw on any surface, may that be polymeric, metallic, wood, concrete, etc. This habit can prove to be extremely costly to the equipment and property owner when the application is damaged by these rats.

Rats! Infestation forces firefighters from Riverside South station

Megan Gillis

Published: April 2, 2017

A rat infestation has forced firefighters to temporarily move out of their station at 910 Earl Armstrong Rd. while city officials and exterminators deal with the rodents.

Fire officials said they learned of the concern Saturday, when as many as 30 rats were reportedly discovered around Fire Station 37 in Riverside South.

The firefighters stationed there were quickly reassigned to neighbouring Fire Stations 44 and 32.

“Upon further investigation it was confirmed that rodents had built nests on the outside of the building and also burrowed their way into of a small vestibule inside the fire station,” said Ottawa Fire Service spokeswoman Danielle Cardinal, who said the main focus is ensuring the building and grounds are free of rats.

“The next step entails monitoring the air quality inside of the Fire Station to ensure it is safe for firefighters to return,” said Cardinal. “Air testing is underway and the recommendations provided by the environmental engineer will determine when the structure will be fully operational.”

Rats force Texas firefighters to abandon firehouse

The move comes after one firefighter recently got sick; the chief said some of them are the size of small puppies

News4SanAntonio

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — A rat infestation has forced New Braunfels firefighters and paramedics to temporarily move out of Station #1 downtown. Now with no tones or emergency alerts and no working trucks, the station is extremely quiet.

Chief Kenneth Jacks said the move is “to keep our guys safe. The safety and health of our personnel is our number one focus.” All of the equipment and personnel were moved out on Monday as a precaution.

Rodent infestation at such a crucial place can be extremely dangerous and may even result in hazards and accidents. Hence, few precautions need to be taken in order to avoid any mishaps.

RodrepelTM, a product manufactured by C Tech Corporation can be incorporated in the various application used at the fire station to make them rodent repellent.

RodrepelTM is an extremely low in toxicity, extremely low hazard and environmentally safe anti-rodent repellent specially developed for a range of polymeric and coating applications including wires and cables, polymeric hoses, etc.

The products are also available in the form of a solid masterbatch, liquid concentrate, and lacquer.

The product available in the form of solid masterbatch can be incorporated into the polymeric applications like wires and cables, fuel hoses, pipes, oil filters, polymeric switch panels, components of ignition box, fuel tanks, foam seats, airbags, tires and other polymeric components from vehicles while they are manufactured. Thus, making the end application rodent resistant.

The product available in the form of liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied to the interior and exterior of the vehicles, fire station. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all kinds of paints and solvents.

The already installed cables, electric junction boxes, polymeric hoses, cable carriers, fuel tanks, battery box, and ducts, etc. from the vehicles can be coated with our lacquer to protect them from the pests gnawing these applications and thus preventing vehicle accidents. The lacquer is a transparent product and it does not wear off easily.

RodrepelTM Rodent Repellent Spray has been formulated through original research by C Tech Corporation. The product is safe for the environment. It can be sprayed on the wirings, underhood components of the vehicle, battery box, fuel tanks, and polymeric hoses. It is compatible with all types of vehicles and totally safe. It can be sprayed on different areas within a fire station to keep rodents at a bay.
