RODENTS: OUR NOT-SO-HYGIENIC CO-DINERS

Rats and rodents pose a humungous problem for hotel owners and authorities today. Their numbers are overwhelming and their presence is revolting! In spite of their tiny stature, the problems they carry are huge and many. At places like hotels and restaurants, their presence is especially horrifying because of the implications they pose. No one ever likes to see a rat running or a cockroach scurrying out of the kitchen where the food just they ate was prepared.

Rats, however, find restaurant kitchens very tempting. For them, it is an easy, unlimited food source. They like to live in the ceilings, in the food storage units, and also utensil cabinets. The leftover food, which is usually thrown in dumpsters nearby also attract rodents in huge numbers. As soon as they find a convenient place, not only do they spread filth but they also start breeding. This brings about an endless circle of rats and mice thriving in the place.

Although the management tries their best to keep rodents away, it is a recurring problem and it happens more than one would like for it to happen. Customers find themselves in the horrible situation of seeing rats and cockroaches in the restaurants they are dining in. Food safety and hygiene become a very important issue that is compromised when the kitchens and storage units are rodent-ridden. These rodents bring with them a plethora of pathogenic germs. They can gnaw on wires, cables and other structurally important things causing large-scale losses for the hotels. Such situations are most unfortunate for hotel management authorities. If reported to and caught by the food safety authority, it can lead to permanent shutting down of the outlet. Food safety practices have become stricter over the years. Restaurants that do not maintain their hygiene standards and do not comply with the food legislation have either paid hefty fines or have been served discontinuation notices.

Some evidence of the same are given below:

COCKROACHES, RAT DROPPINGS AMONG REASONS FOR 42 FOOD BUSINESS CLOSURES IN 2020

IRELAND

JAMES COX

Evidence of rodent infestations and the presence of cockroaches were among the reason for the closure of 42 food businesses in 2020.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today stated that 42 Enforcement Orders were served on food businesses for breaches in food safety legislation in 2020, a decrease of 67 per cent in comparison to 125 Enforcement Orders served in 2019.

The drop in numbers largely reflects the impact of Covid-19, where large numbers of food service businesses were temporarily closed for long periods throughout the year, and is not necessarily due to improved food safety practices.

The FSAI reiterated the importance of robust food safety management systems and stressed that the legal responsibility lies with food businesses to ensure that the food they sell is compliant with food safety legislation and is safe to eat.

Between January 1st and December 31st, 2020, 31 Closure Orders, two Improvement Orders and nine Prohibition Orders were issued by environmental health officers in the Health Service Executive (HSE), veterinary inspectors in the local authorities and officers of the FSAI on food businesses throughout the country.

Filthy conditions

The types of recurring food safety issues that led to Enforcement Orders in 2020 were: unregistered and unsupervised food businesses; filthy conditions; evidence of rodent infestations and rodent droppings; the presence of cockroaches; failure to maintain temperatures of foodstuffs; unsuitable food storage facilities; and improper or lack of water facilities.

Dr Pamela Byrne, chief executive, FSAI stressed the serious nature of a food business being served an Enforcement Order.

She said: “While in a normal year it would be very encouraging to see such a substantial drop in the need for Enforcement Orders, in 2020, however it is likely that most of the reduction reflects the temporary closure of food businesses for many months due to COVID-19 restrictions. Notwithstanding this, 42 Enforcement Orders are still too many, as it shows that, unfortunately, there continues to be a minority of food businesses not complying with their legal requirements.”

“All food businesses must recognise that they are legally bound to ensure that the food they produce is safe to eat. Consumers have a right to safe food. Food businesses must comply with food law and all breaches of food safety legislation will be dealt with to the full extent of the law,” Ms. Byrne added.

NEW YORK CHIPOTLE FORCED TO CLOSE DUE TO AVOCADO-EATING RATS

New Delhi Published: Dec 10, 2020

A rat helping a chef churn out lip-smacking food can only happen in movies like Ratatouille. In reality, rats are a menace to hotels and restaurants. The rodent may be an important part of ecosystem, food chains and whatnot, nobody wants anything to do with rats around their food.

A sustained onslaught from rats has brought a branch of fast-food giant Chipotle to its knees. These rats not only took liking to Avocado, the favourite snack staple of New Yorkers, but also attacked staff of the restaurant, as per news reports.

This branch of Chipotle is located in Upper Manhattan.

“It’s pure chaos every time a rat appears,” an employee named Melvin Paulino was quoted by New York Post as saying.

The rat infestation is so much that even though the restaurant is shut, employees have to come to clean-up so that the problem doesn’t get worse.

The issue began in summer this year when the staff found half-eaten Avocados. The rats took particular liking to the expensive fruit so much that the staff was forced to keep Avocados inside freezers just to save them from rats.

But then, more issues started. Bags of rice were found to have been chewed open, the rice eaten. And the mice also took to chewing electric wires that resulted in problems for computer systems in the store.

Efforts were made to contain the damage. But the problem became so big that the store could no longer handle orders as computer systems and wires were too badly damaged by the rats. Such situations are extremely scary. To think that, all our defence systems have constantly failed when faced by these nettlesome little rodents, is worrisome. The high-tech security networks developed for keeping rats at bay have all proven to be only temporary. All solutions for their control and management are short-term and the rodents always seem to come back.

However, C-Tech Corporation has the perfect solution to keep them away and forever! We manufacture a range of extremely low toxicity, extremely low hazard, and environment-friendly rodent repellent products. Our product, Rodrepel™, is a blend of green chemistry and smart technology. It acts through a series of highly developed intricate mechanisms ensuring that rodents are kept away from the target application. Moreover, our eco-friendly product does not kill the target species but only repels them.

The product triggers a fear response in rodents thus protecting the application. It causes severe temporary distress to the mucous membrane of the rodents due to which the pest stays away from the application. The product triggers an unpleasant reaction in case if the pest tries to gnaw away the application. After encountering the above-mentioned emotions, the animal instinctively perceives it with something it should stay away from and stores this information for future reference. The fact that certain rodents are repelled is mimicked by other rodents as well. Thus, the other rodents too stay away from the applications. The unpleasant experience is imprinted within the animal’s memory and passed on to its progeny.

Rodrepel™ is available in the form of a solid masterbatch, liquid concentrate, lacquer, spray and wood polish additive.

The wood polish additive can be blended with wood polish and applied on the wooden articles, storage units and furniture. The product available in liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied to already installed cables and wires, the coating of walls and other entry points. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all kinds of paints and solvents. This will keep the rodents away.

Our product in the form of a spray is very easy to use. It can be sprayed on the infested area to repel the rodents and prevent them from entering.

The LD50 value of Rodrepel is 50,000 mg/kg making it non-poisonous, which is an important parameter to be considered in the food industry. By using our products, you can get an effective and long-lasting solution against rodent nuisance.
