Flying squirrels – Nuisance pests

You thought that this squirrel has wings, but that is not so. Though called as flying squirrels they do not have wings!

Contrary to their common name, these small tree squirrels actually glide instead of fly. They stretch out their legs, spreading the fold of skin between the front and hind legs, to form a kind of parachute that lets them glide from branch to branch.

Flying squirrels are mostly nocturnal, and can be distinguished from regular squirrels by their large, orbital eyes.

They are also known to be the most carnivorous of the group, feeding primarily on nuts and seeds, but also on insects and bird eggs.

These squirrels feed on nuts, acorns seeds, berries, some insects and bird eggs. In preparation for the colder months, some of the food is stored in the nest chamber, while the rest is hoarded in tree crotches.

Flying squirrels become pests when they take up residence in an attic where they can cause a noticeable odor and damage with their urine. The species is of very minor medical concern.

Although flying squirrels can glide for long distances, 100 feet or more depending on the starting height, Eastern Gray Squirrels can also jump a fair distance.

Some experts claim that if a flyer is 80 feet up in the air, it can glide for hundreds of feet. A flying squirrel can adjust their flight pattern via their tail and wrist bone. When preparing to land, they slow their decent with a parachute style curvature.

The life expectancy for a flying squirrel is six years and can extend to fifteen years if they are held in captivity.

Although hard to notice in the wild, and sometimes in your house, flying squirrels can quickly become hard to solve a problem once they decide to invade your home. As a matter of fact, because of their troublesome nature and the extreme frustration, they cause homeowners who end up with flying squirrels in their attic or walls.

A dozen squirrels are “partying” in a Virginia Beach woman’s attic

By Mary Reid Barrow – Correspondent

Jan 29, 2018

A slew of homeless flying squirrels – all healthy – are spending the winter with wildlife rehabilitator Connie Heibert in Virginia Beach.

They are refugees from Diana Bailey’s attic in Lake Lawson near Northampton Boulevard in Virginia Beach.

The nocturnal critters began partying their nights away in December. And Bailey sent me this report a couple weeks ago: “Right now they are holding hockey matches back and forth across my bedroom ceiling about midnight most evenings.”

Squirrel responsible for damaging Christmas lights in New Jersey town

By Travis Fedschun | Fox News

A New Jersey town’s search for the vandal who damaged a popular Christmas lights display came to an end Saturday when officials discovered the Grinch was actually a medium-sized rodent.

Officials in Sea Girt, 65 miles south of New York City, spent the past week scrambling to replace the display’s severed wires in time for the borough’s annual tree lighting on Friday, WNBC-TV reported.

The morning after the ceremony, the Sea Girt Police Department said it caught the vandal in the act, posting photos on social media of a squirrel climbing on the display and trying to take a bite out of the wires before running away.

“The Sea Girt Police Department is proud to report that the case of our broken holiday lights has been solved,” the department said in a press release. “We are happy that no human acted as a grinch in this incident. The squirrel was ‘charged’ with criminal mischief and released on bail.”

The discovery of the damaged wires originally had some residents thinking a vandal was trying to sabotage the holiday spirit.

Trapping the flying squirrels to fix the problem, is not the answer, killing and trapping sugar gliders and flying squirrels is a very difficult task for many trappers, and their methods can be harmful to the flying squirrel and the results will usually be temporary and ineffective.

C Tech Corporation can offer a solution to stop damage the damage caused by these pesky squirrels. Rodrepel™ is a non-toxic, non-hazardous, non-carcinogenic and environmentally safe, anti-rodent additive.

Troublesome squirrels

Turns out the common squirrel has an uncommon tendency for nibbling through the nation’s fiber optic cables.

Squirrels damage electrical distribution facilities by tunneling, by chewing through electrical insulation, or by simultaneously coming into contact with two conductors at different electrical potentials.

Squirrels have four teeth in the front of their mouth that constantly grow throughout their lives. This ensures that their teeth don’t wear down to nubs from gnawing on nuts and other objects.

So the next time your internet is down, maybe don’t shake your fist at your cable provider right away. First throw open the sash and see if there’s a little furry beast sitting on the line, gnawing on it like a corn.

Squirrel causes power outage in Manassas

June 08, 2020; Susie Webb

The City of Manassas experienced a brief power outage on Monday morning affecting 493 customers.

The culprit – a squirrel.

At 8:25 a.m. the power went out. It was restored in 23 minutes.

Residents pay the city of Manassas for their electricity.

The city provides power to all of its residents with 205 miles of primary power lines.

Squirrels have probably caused way more power outages than cyber-criminals

If your power has ever gone out on a beautiful day, you may have been the victim of a squirrelly attack.

That’s because squirrels are responsible for an impressive number of electrical issues each year.

Although it’s tricky to get a real sense of how many outages squirrels manage to cause, the numbers are daunting. One estimate tallies 560 in Montana alone last year. Another blames a whopping 400 outages in Austin, Texas, last year on the sneaky rodents.

Squirrels and their partners in crime cause about 10-20% of all power outages, according to The Washington Post.

C Tech Corporation can offer a solution to overcome the damage caused by squirrels. RodrepelTM  is an anti-rodent and animal aversive which is extremely low in toxicity and extremely low hazard, environmentally safe solution. It is engineered using a unique set of complex compounds.

RodrepelTM is available in the form of a masterbatch, liquid concentrate, lacquer, wood polish additives and sprays.

The masterbatch can be incorporated in cable sheathing. The product in the form of liquid concentrate can be diluted in Paints and organic solvents and applied to cables. The lacquer which is a topical application can be directly applied on the already installed wires and cables, cabinets and transformer boxes. The wood polish additives can be mixed with the wood polish and applied on wooden surfaces.

Our newly developed products,  Rodrepel™ Rodent Repellent Spray is an easy to use product which can be sprayed on wires and cables, electronic appliances, cabinets, so as to as avoid the rodents from entering them.

RodrepelTM  is cost-effective, inert, and thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, NEA, EU BPR, APVMA compliant and FIFRA exempted.

Battling rat infestation amidst a pandemic

As self-isolation becomes mandatory in more cities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, rats are becoming bolder in their search for food.

Coronavirus: People ‘harassed by rats’ during lockdown

Pest controllers are receiving more reports of rats around homes and gardens during the coronavirus lockdown.

The British Pest Control Association has seen a 51% rise in rat call-outs since March, which experts said could be because restaurants and shops are closed.

Professor of Ecology at Greenwich University, Steven Belmain, said the animals are looking for alterative food sources.

Dan Dobson, a Hampshire pest controller, said some people have even reported being “harassed” by rodents.

Rats come out of hiding as lockdowns eliminate urban trash

With less litter on the ground and garbage in Dumpsters behind restaurants, rats are seeking food elsewhere.

By Emma Marris

April 3, 2020

AS HUMAN BEINGS around the world change their daily behavior to try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, our absence is causing ripple effects in the urban ecosystem. Among the most noticeable changes: Rats are coming out of hiding. They’re taking to the streets in broad daylight and invading homes in a desperate search for food.

People who have never have rat problems before are suddenly coping with unwanted visitors invading their social isolation.

Rats are everywhere and they can adapt easily to new environments. The lockdown has brought changes to human lives. But the sudden unavailability of food, trash, leftovers has created a panic situation and this has resulted in rodents causing more and more damage.

What can be a novel solution to this menace?

Use Rodrepel™, a C Tech Corporation product which is an extremely low toxic, low hazard rodent aversive. These eco-friendly products do not kill the target species but only repel them.

Rodrepel™ Rodent Repellent Spray is an easy to use product. It can be sprayed on the infested area to repel the rodents and prevent them from entering the premises.

The products are also available in the form of a solid masterbatch, liquid concentrate, lacquer, and wood polish additive.

The product available in the form of solid masterbatch can be incorporated into polymeric applications like wires and cables, pipes, etc. Thereby making the end application rodent resistant.

The product available in the form of liquid concentrate can be diluted in paints and can be applied over the interior and exterior of the house, garages, etc. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all kinds of paints and solvents.

The already installed cables, pipes, and other application can be coated with lacquer to protect them from the rodents gnawing on this application and thus preventing the damage. The lacquer is a transparent product and it does not wear off easily.

The wood polish additive can be blended with wood polish and applied on the wooden articles and furniture.

By using these products, you can get an effective and long-lasting solution against rodent nuisance.

Rodent nuisance in offices

Your office provides an exceptional shelter for mice; it hides them from the cold weather and protects them from predators. To add to this with all the food you leave behind, your office is like a giant all-you-can-eat buffet.

There are many ways in which a mouse, or rat, can get into your office. Mice are very flexible creatures, able to run and jump at great lengths, as well as climb almost any surface. A young mouse can squeeze through a gap as small as a finger ring.

One way in which mice can navigate their way into your workplace is through connections between different buildings such as water pipes, cables, and other underground methods. This allows rats and mice to quickly move between different buildings with ease.

If a mouse/rat can’t fit through a hole they will gnaw at it with their teeth until they can. Their teeth are very sharp and strong and can gnaw through almost anything and it needs to be kept in check failing to which their jaw might get stuck. This can include some metals, especially when it’s old and weak such as water pipes.

Once inside, mice can find their way around using ‘mouse motorways’ we have created like cable risers, false ceilings, false floors, lift shafts – quick ways to travel long distances in search for food.

Another way mice navigate their way into your office is through food pallets. If a food preparation plant has an infestation of rats or mice then this can quickly spread to other areas. If a mouse finds its way onto a truck transporting food, it will no doubt explore the environment of the new area they have traveled to. All mice need to survive is shelter and minimal food and water, plus they can multiply within months.

Rodents such as rats and mice can spread diseases through their droppings. They leave a mess anywhere and everywhere, including your keyboard and phone. You don’t want to be touching that first thing on a Monday morning. On top of this mice and rat urine is also one of the main instigators of the spread of rodent-borne diseases.

Mice are very neophilic creatures; it is in their nature to explore – especially with their teeth. They gnaw at items in search of food, gain passage, or just to keep their teeth in check.

Being in an office environment this curiosity can lead to rats and mice chewing on the billions of cables in your office. This can be anywhere from keyboard and phone wires to internet and server cables.

One of the potential downfalls of rodents gnawing at the wires in your office is the potential to start fires.  By chewing on the wires, the mice leave the rubber casing open, which can lead to the short-circuiting and catching alight.

On top of the potential fire hazard having mice in your office create a risk of losing work.  Nowadays everything is done on computers, having a mouse gnawing its way through the power cables can result in computer failure leading to loss of work.

Let us look at look at some of the evidences:

Officials blame rats for missing rubber stamps at Golamunda CDPO office

 Updated: May 29th, 2020

Officials blame rats for missing rubber stamps at Golamunda CDPO office 1

Bhawanipatna: In a bizarre incident, the rubber stamps at Golamunda CDPO office in Kalahandi district have gone missing. The officials have blamed rats for the development. They claimed that rats had devoured the rubber stamps.

Sources said, Premlal Sunani a resident of Khasiguda village under Golamunda block in the district went to the CDPO office to file a RTI application. He wanted to get data on the distribution of Chhatua (Multi-grain Cereal powder) and pre-school kit in Golamunda block.

After receiving the application, public information officer (PRO) Phuralia Majhi signed on a duplicate copy and marked it as ‘received’. However, there was no official stamp or seal on the document.

When Sunani did not find the official stamp on either of the two copies and only the signature of the PRO, he asked for reasons. The PRO then told him that rats had eaten up all the official rubber stamps.

Rats Sack Buhari from Office, Now Works From Home

August 22, 2017, PM News

President Muhammadu Buhari will work from home after rodents damaged his official office during a more than 100-day overseas medical absence, a presidential spokesman disclosed on Tuesday.

The rodents damaged furniture and air conditioning fittings in the president’s official Abuja office while he was in London receiving treatment

But government spokesman Garba Shehu said the office required renovation after damage was done to the furniture and air conditioning in his absence.

He told the BBC the president had a “well-equipped” office at home that he could work “perfectly” from.

Manhattan post office overrun by RATS as rodents devour parcels

By  Nina Golgowski , 22 December 2011

With 16.5 billion letters, packages and cards expected through the U.S. Postal Service this holiday season, the last obstacle senders might expect their packages to face, are thieving rats.

A post office in Manhattan is fighting a rat infestation leaving chewed boxes and envelopes that carries any item found edible, by both human and rodent taste.

Packages found deliverable despite their outside damage of visible gnawing and gaping holes are showing up in the hands of their recipients as mere shells.

The little animals can smell the chocolate and goodies,’ Maureen Marion, a USPS spokeswoman for the North East told the New York Times, whose office has found the most reported damaged packages.

On Monday the post office changed its usual visitation by an exterminator from every two weeks to once a week.

Ms Marion says that for items ‘damaged in handling,’ unless they were insured, there is no ability for compensation, ‘regardless of the nature of the damage.’

It is a high time that we take appropriate action to control the rodent menace in offices.

Seemingly innocuous attacks by mice can cost us dearly in terms of monetary value as well as human life. It is imperative that we take steps to control and contain this damage. Conventional methods of dealing with these creatures included use of armored cable, use of glass roving, insecticidal baits, glue boards and use of toxic chemical additives. Along the years each of these tried and tested methods have failed at some levels due to many reasons including adaptability of rodents, development of immunity to traditional poisons etc.

The time has come to look for a better alternative which is effective, ecofriendly and long lasting solution.

A solution involving using the mechanism of repellence will be the best way to go about this as it will mean that the rodents are kept away from the application in the long run.

We at C Tech Corporation are in a unique position to provide solutions to the problems caused by these creatures.

At C Tech Corporation we make use of Mother Nature’s gift of senses to these rodents in developing an extremely low toxic and low hazard formulation!

RodrepelTM is an extremely low-toxic, and low hazard rodent aversive repellent. RodrepelTM is a perfect blend of smart technology and green chemistry. This product acts through a series of highly developed intricate mechanism ensuring that the rodents are kept away from the application.

The product is compliant with RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, NEA, EU BPR and is FIFRA exempted. Our ecofriendly products do not kill the target species but only repel them.

The products are available in the form of masterbatch which can be incorporated in pipes, films, cables etc while manufacturing. This would result in the final cable or wire being rodent repellent. This would be an efficient way of deterring the rodents from chewing the cables and wires and thus negate the possibility of a short circuit. While the RodrepelTM liquid concentrate (diluted in paints) and RodrepelTM lacquer solution can be coated over the applications which need protection.

The RodrepelTM rodent repellent spray can be used by anyone and is an easy to use product. It can be sprayed in the offices, canteens, storage rooms, washrooms, even on the electrical components and devices from offices, etc. to keep the rodents away from office premises.

Our products provide a safe and environmentally friendly solution to avoid rodent infestation in office.

Restaurants attracting rodents

What could be the biggest threat to the restaurants?

Could it be the terrorist attack or could it be the flood from the river alongside!?

To make you wonder, it would be none of the above but an attack by pests!

The presence of pests in restaurants is intolerable. It is just not an unpleasant sight, but is an unhygienic condition as well!

Restaurants are the best source for the rodents to have a great meal for themselves. No restaurant, not even the best in the world, can escape from reports of a mouse infestation and once the mouse is out of the bag, the damage seems to be as news spreads through the press and through word of mouth. These days, eatery owners need to be more vigilant than ever. Every restaurant has the potential to attract mice. The mice enter the kitchen and searching for food in the garbage and a place where they can find food. Once this mouse enters they create a great mess. Rodents are not the only nuisance but can cause property damage and transmit diseases.

Rodents are associated with a number of health risks; these diseases can be spread to humans directly or indirectly through contact with rodents feces, urine, saliva, rodent bites or fleas. Mice and rats also are a potential source of allergens. Their droppings, dander and shed hair can cause people to sneeze and experience other allergic reactions. Mice will chew on the insulation around wires, this has been known to cause a real threat of fire. Mice will even build their nests in large electrical appliances, again chewing on or through insulation and wiring, which can cause the appliance to short circuit, or lead to the risk of fire.

In the past century more than 10 million died from rodent-borne diseases, the major diseases caused by mice are:

Hantavirus: This virus can be transmitted when rodent waste is stirred up

Salmonella: Small rodents known to frequently carry the salmonella bacteria in their digestive tract, it spread through contact with rodent waste

Rat-bite fever: Rat-bite fever can occur in people who have been bitten or infected by the rat or another animal that has been contaminated by a rodent carrying disease

Removing rodents from the trap or poison like pest control will not keep them out of our house or restaurants as there should be a permanent solution to it.

Evidence for the mice in restaurants,

Chinese restaurant so infested with mice that rodent droppings found on food

The restaurant in Manchester ended up forking out £15,000 in fines after droppings were also found on work surfaces and food packages

By Sophie Halle-Richards │1st June 2019

A Chinatown restaurant that claimed to be of “high quality” was forced to temporarily shut after it was found to be infested with rodents.

Hunan Restaurant in Manchester’s Chinese district was so badly infested that mouse droppings were spotted on its work surfaces and food.

The extent to which the restaurant was infested was only laid bare when Manchester Council’s Environmental Health Officer carried out an inspection.

During the inspection, food packaging was found to have been gnawed on by mice, and mouse droppings were also found on food stock and near food containers.

The inspection also highlighted poor hygiene, with food building up around kitchen equipment, dirty air filters and unclean surfaces.

Access holes for rodents were found in the floor, around pipework and under doors – allowing mice to roam free about the restaurant.

With restaurants closed, rats are getting aggressive, the CDC says

By Alaa Elassar, CNN

May 27, 2020

Brown rats scamper on Pearl Street, in New York’s Lower Manhattan neighborhood.

(CNN)With restaurants closed or open with limited capacity due to the coronavirus pandemic, a certain subset of those establishments’ “patrons” is struggling.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning that certain areas across the country are reporting “an increase in rodent activity,” as rats search for sources of food other than restaurant dumpsters.

“Jurisdictions have closed or limited service at restaurants and other commercial establishments to help limit the spread of COVID-19,” the CDC said. “Rodents rely on the food and waste generated by these establishments. Community-wide closures have led to a decrease in food available to rodents, especially in dense commercial areas.”

Local country club restaurant shut down after the inspector finds evidence of rodents

A state health inspector temporarily closed the restaurant at an (Orange Country) country club after finding evidence of rodents.

The Rio Pinar Country Club restaurant, called Champions Grill on its website, was closed Dec. 6 after the inspector found dozens of rodent droppings in the kitchen and in storage areas.

The club is located at 8600 El Prado Drive in eastern Orange County.

“More than 20 dark fresh moist rodent droppings on shelves in the storage room in the kitchen area,” one of the violations read, according to the report from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The report noted rodent droppings under a dish machine, behind a cooler and in various other areas on the floor and in a plastic bucket.

There were also scratch marks along walls.

The evidence of rodents was among 31 violations the restaurant at the Rio Pinar Country Club totaled during the inspection, including five high-priority violations.

The restaurant was closed for two days until being allowed to reopen Dec. 8 after a follow-up inspection.

Envirosafe additives to protect wires and cables from pest attacks

The global wire and cable market is projected to reach USD 235.9 billion by 2026. However, with escalating demand, these cables possess some major threats. Pest attacks are one of them. The pests unaware of the use of cables indiscriminately feed on them.  By gnawing through the wires and cables they can cause fires.

Aerial, surface and underground cables and wires have all been damaged by rodents and insects. Electrical insulation of the electric wiring systems in buildings and vehicles has been severely damaged resulting in fire hazards. The growing volume of online stories about rodents chewing up the expensive wiring harness that keep the cars running is an issue of concern. The biological attack on insulated electrical cable is potentially severe at military installations, railway and transit cables, overhead cables, and data transmission. The complaints about power outages due to pest attack on cables have always been on a peak.

Not only rodents but also the insects are equally responsible for causing damage to the cables and wires. The insect larvae frequently burrow into the insulation of above-ground cables feeding on the cellulose material present in the insulation leaving the cable sheaths pocketed and pitted with neatly bored holes and depressions. Aggressive species of termites can cause damage to cables at depths of up to ten feet. Also, the ants destroy the electric wiring unfazed by conventional pesticides.

When the conventional methods employed to reduce this pest menace have proved to be ineffective, an efficient and durable solution is the need of the hour. At C Tech Corporation we have a unique and eco-friendly solution to prevent a wide variety of pests from attacking the wires and cables. Our globally patented and trademarked products, namely Rodrepel™, Termirepel™, and Combirepel™ are polymer additives that are extremely low toxic, extremely low hazard, and are not harmful to the environment. Our products work on the mechanism of repellence: they do not kill, they just repel the pests. Our products in the form of masterbatches can be incorporated in the cables while they are extruded, thus making the cables pest repellent. Such cables can be a unique solution, consequently being long-lasting and pest repulsive.

Apart from the masterbatches, these products are available in the form of lacquer and spray; lacquer can be directly applied on the installed cables while the sprays can be sprayed on the wires and cables to protect them from pest damages.

Unwanted house guests: The Roof Rats!

There are many key indicators of a roof rat infestation in the home. First and foremost, seeing an actual rodent, dead or alive, is a sign of a potential roof rat problem. Another common sign of a roof rat infestation is the presence of droppings around the home.

Roof rats are named so because of their excellent climbing abilities that allow them to easily access the upper parts of structures; they are also highly adaptable and can survive in a variety of environments. Typically living in colonies, roof rats prefer to nest in the upper parts of buildings, such as attics and roof decks. They can also be found under, in and around structures, as well as in piles of wood or garbage.

Roof rats only live up to one year but have the ability to produce as many as 40 new offspring during their lifetime.

Due to their gnawing ability, they gnaw on any possible surface may that be wood, polymer, metal, etc. to keep their teeth in check. But this ability of the rodents causes huge bucks of repair to the homeowners. Recent news reported are:

Roof rats find shelter in quasi-abandoned homes here

By Paul Maryniak, AFN Executive Editor │October 3, 2018

Roof rats are making themselves at home in Ahwatukee – literally.

They’re invading unattended houses – even coming from the sewer system and up through dry toilets to get inside – destroying carpets, ventilation ducts and anything else they can gnaw their way through and creating a potential health hazard for the entire neighborhood.

“In one of the retirement subdivisions between 48th and 51st streets, they absolutely devastated a home that hasn’t been lived in for a few years,” said Karen Young, assistant general manager for the Ahwatukee Board of Management.

The rats also “opened the door” for rabbits, added Young, who said that neighbors who entered the house found a dead baby bunny and roof rats, a ruined carpet and a bathtub full of droppings.

Woman says roof rats infestation forced her to move out of a senior living center

By Nick Ciletti │ July 10, 2017

Rats crawling inside her walls, feces all over the place, and a stench so bad, it was making her sick.

A Scottsdale grandmother tells us – it’s a living nightmare. And her own, private hell has only gotten worse — all because of roof rats.

76-year-old Kathy Marcil and her family are blaming management at the Pueblo Norte Senior Living Facility in Scottsdale. But it’s not because of what they did – it’s because of what this family says they didn’t do.

The traditionally used methods for rodent control involve the use of mechanical traps which fail to work on a mechanical error. Fumigation of pesticides is done to keep rodents away from the applications. Glue boards are used which are dangerous when children and pets are around. Rodent baits are one of the most dangerous methods used to kill the rodents. Rodenticides like Bromadiolone inhibits the coagulation of their blood.

The logistics of using traps or rodenticides is not at all a solution to this menace.

When all these methods have proved to be ineffective, why rely on them? You can use products that repel these rodents instead of killing them thus balancing the eco-system.

At C Tech Corporation we provide you with the effective solution. Our product RodrepelTM is developed by using green technology. It is an extremely low concern, low toxic, low hazardous and non-mutagenic animal aversive. It is durable under extreme climatic conditions.

Our product works on the mechanism of repellency. The product triggers a fear response in rodents thus protecting the application. It causes severe temporary distress to the mucous membrane of the rodents due to which the pest stays away from the application. The product triggers an unpleasant reaction in case if the pest tries to gnaw away the application. After encountering the above-mentioned emotions, the animal instinctively perceives it with something it should stay away from and stores this information for future reference. The fact that certain rodents are repelled is mimicked by other rodents as well. Thus, the other rodents too stay away from the applications. The unpleasant experience is imprinted within the animal’s memory and passed on to its progeny.

Our product is ROHS, ROHS2, EU BPR, APVMA, NEA compliant and FIFRA exempted. Our product does not cause harm to targeted as well as non-targeted species. It just repels them from the applied product. It works on the mechanism of repellency.

RodrepelTM is available in the forms of masterbatch, liquid concentrate, and lacquer.

Masterbatch can be incorporated into polymeric applications like fencing, water pipes, agricultural films, polymeric tree guards, wires, cables, etc. This would result in the final application being rodent repellent.

Liquid concentrate can be mixed in paints in a pre-determined ratio and be applied to the interior and exterior of houses, ceilings, gardens, farms, outhouse, etc. to repel roof rats from the area required.

Lacquer form can be directly applied to the already installed application such as attics, wooden fences, guards, pipes, wires, cables, etc. The lacquer is compatible with most of the surfaces like metal, wood, concrete, polymer, ceramic etc.

We have developed our product in the form of a spray, the RodrepelTM rodent repellent spray which is an easy to use product. The product can be sprayed on components from homes, offices, kitchen, storage areas, attics, etc. after clearing the dust and waste from components.

Hence by using RodrepelTM, homes, farms, and gardens can be prevented from roof rat damage effectively and considerably.

Furry little creatures behind power outages

Power outages have been a popular topic lately, with concerns about the global pandemic, recent storms, and freezing temperatures testing the grid’s strength. Utility companies have worked hard to keep everything running smoothly by replacing broken infrastructure, bringing in extra equipment and crews, and taking advantage of demand response. While there are many causes for outages ranging from fallen branches to cable failure, one of the main causes comes in a cute, fuzzy disguise. Yes, the real electricity enemy, or should I say enemies are squirrels.

Squirrels may be cute, but they can wreak havoc on your home’s wiring and insulation. Outside or in, at a utility pole or within your walls, these bushy-tailed rodents can be a major headache. Just how much damage can they do, and what can you do to prevent it? Let’s take a look.

‘Animal contact’ causes 300 to lose power in Westport

By Jim Shay; May 10, 2020

Photo: Shay, Jim

More than 300 customers are without power in Westport Sunday morning.

Just before 7:30 a.m., Eversource reported 313 customers were without electricity.

The outage was reported at 6:38 a.m. It did not give a estimate on restoration time.

It listed the cause as “animal contact.”

Eversource said animal-related outages typically spike in May, June and July.

Last June, there were 430 animal-related outages, the highest monthly number all year, compared to the lowest — 99 animal-related outages in December.

Squirrels can cause a lot of power outages. Raccoons and skunks are culprits, too. The animals can che through electrical equipment or come in contact with electricity.

Squirrel knocks out power in southwest Nixa

Wyatt D. Wheeler, Springfield News- April 23, 2020

If you were without power in southwest Nixa on Thursday morning, you have a squirrel to blame.

City of Nixa spokesperson Drew Douglas said in a release that around 9:15 a.m., a squirrel got on top of a large transformer at the Nixa Utilities Espy substation and caused a safety mechanism to trip and cut power to over 4,500 customers in southwest Nixa. Power was restored by 9:45 a.m.

It can be assumed the squirrel was trying to reach an acorn or was trying to keep its social distance from the other squirrels. One way or another, this story is squirrely.

The damage caused by rodents proves to be very expensive for the plant and owner of equipment.

So then what’s the solution? This question has been answered by C Tech Corporation’s RodrepelTM. It acts as an effective way to repel rodents, overcoming the limitations of the general rodenticides. The general properties of RodrepelTM are:

•     Low toxic

•     Low hazardous

•     Non volatile

•     Environmentally safe

RodrepelTM does not kill but only keeps the animal away by making use of the sensory mechanisms. The product functions from a distance generating a typical fear response in the animal. Thus, RodrepelTM actually helps in modifying animal behavior. Rodents being social animals also communicate the bad experience to their population in vicinity.

The masterbatch of RodrepelTM can be incorporated in wires and cables.

The product in the form of liquid concentrate can be diluted in Paints and organic solvents and applied to cables. The lacquer which is a topical application can be directly applied on the already installed wires and cables.

Our newly developed products,  Rodrepel™ Rodent Repellent Spray is an easy to use product which can be sprayed on wires and cables, electronic appliances, cabinets, so as to as avoid the rodents from entering them.

RodrepelTM is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, NEA, EU BPR, APVMA compliant and FIFRA exempted.

Where’s the party tonight?

It seems like rodents are very much busy partying these days! The current lockdown situation across the world has brought everything at a halt.

Cars are proving to be incredibly delicious treats for rodents these days. Of all the problems that cause significant damage and repair bills for your car, it turns out rats, although relatively small are amongst the biggest culprits. Apart from residing under the hood which provides these mammals a warm and cozy place to live, especially during winters, they also snack on the car wires which in turn affects the car health. This rat party, under the hood, can cost a pretty penny for us.

Rodents are blessed with continuously growing incisors which makes them gnaw on anything that comes their way. Part of the blame for such gnawing on wires is the coatings which impart a smooth texture, sweet smell and bright color to the wires. This further engenders contact of bare wires causing shorts. Rodents mainly chew near their nest or shelter, so it could be in a tight, hidden area where you don’t usually think of looking for a problem.

Along with wires, this four-legged creature also attacks the car interiors by chewing through the seat covers and other foam material inside.

Let us have a look at some recent incidence where rats have caused some serious damage in the automobile sector:

Rats spend lockdown in stationary cars on diet of wires

Arpit Basu | TNN | May 21, 2020

Visakhapatnam: Car mechanics in the city have been addressing issues of rodent infestation since the lockdown was eased. Many car owners, who initially complained of engines refusing to start during the lockdown, are now complaining of rodent tenants inside their cars!

“Last Sunday I went out in my car after a gap of 65 days. As the car hit the road, the first thing I noticed was that my headlight was on. I took the car to a mechanic and he showed me that rats have damaged the wiring system,” K Srinivasa Rao, a public sector bank employee, said.

Car mechanic Firozuddin, who runs a garage at the police control room and also repairs private vehicles besides the ones used by the city police, said many car owners have come to his garage with chewed-up wiring systems in the last few weeks.

Honda’s Soy-Based Wiring Covers Irresistible to Rodents: Lawsuit

NBC NEWS

Environmentally friendly car wiring with a soy-based coating is too tempting for rodents to resist, according to a federal class-action lawsuit that demands Honda pick up the tab for the damage caused by gnawing mice, rabbits and squirrels.

It’s high time now to take some serious actions against these rodent attacks. We just can’t let them eat our cars anymore!

C Tech Corporation can offer a solution to this problem. Our products RodrepelTM is an extremely low toxicity and extremely low hazard and eco-friendly rodent aversive. The product is compliant with RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, APVMA, NEA, EU-BPR, and FIFRA exempted. Non-toxic repellent masterbatches for bioplastic applications

Rats do more than $370 Million of damage to car every year

  • Hammer Technologies, March 2016

We often come across news like this and there are several other pieces of evidence for the pest nuisance in various sectors and how they affect our routine and lifestyle. The vandalization of polymeric applications by pests is very common.

Decades of accumulated environmental negligence and the impact of using so much of conventional plastic has brought the earth to the brink of various probable disasters. Having realized this right, bioplastics have emerged as a potential alternative.

But even the bio-based plastics are vulnerable to pest attacks and can result in huge damage and losses to the application.

The damage across various applications is documented below:

Wires and cables:

Cables form the backbone of the telecommunication sector, defence sector, rail transport sector, etc. However, the rodents and insects get attracted to the colors and smell of polymers due to which they try to feed on the biopolymeric applications. Physical damage to these cables can lead several sectors to a standstill due to loss of essential data, information, and connectivity.

Automotive wiring:

An increase in the number of cases for class action lawsuits is noticed as the cars with the soy based wires are used extensively and the same is damaged by some pests. Though the soy-based wires are used considering the environment aspect, their use has also attracted more pests towards automobiles. With the addition of soy to these applications, the car wires become a wonderful treat for these pests. This has substantially increased the number of car breakdowns leading to costly repairs.

Bale wrap silage:

Plastic wrapping is commonly used to preserve bales over any moisture range. However, these films are vulnerable to attack by aggressive pests. Invasive rodents and insects are known to destroy these films. Birds attack the silage films thereby creating holes. The pests are attracted to the smell of fresh grass, puncturing the film with their incisors and beaks.

Packaging films:

The development of high-performance bio-based plastics is one important factor for the sustainable growth of the packaging industry. However, insect pests, in particular, can produce several different types of damage on the surface of the film side and perforate the plastic film. This damage consists of scratches and tears and holes.

Agricultural nets:

Bio-based plastic nets are used for protecting crops against birds and insects. These nets require protection from rodents as well.

Soil retention sheeting:

Insects like termites and ants have an underground activity that can cause damage to the sheeting thereby resulting in failure of its purpose.

Understanding the behaviour of pests is essential to protect the end application from pest damages.

The reason why rodents are such determined chewers is that they actually chew for survival. Rodents have two pairs of continuously growing incisors which must be kept sharp by gnawing. So just like we clip our fingernails, a rat gnaws on things in order to keep its teeth in check. Overgrown teeth are a possible problem for them. The rats have a bite force greater than that of a shark! While insects are equally aggressive and attracted to plasticizers causing damages.

Value solution:

C Tech Corporation, a pioneer company in India manufactures non-toxic aversive repellent masterbatches for a wide range of bio-based plastic applications.

The niche products manufactured by CTech are:

RodrepelTM: Anti-rodent and animal aversive repellent

TermirepelTM: Anti-termite and insect aversive repellent which has a broad spectrum in its action. It is effective against more than 500 species of invasive pests like bedbugs, termites, ants, cockroaches, beetles, etc.

CombirepelTM: It is an extremely low toxic, animal, insect, and bird aversive repellent. It works on the combined mechanism of Rodrepel™ and Termirepel™.

These products are based on plant-based chemistry. The expansion of ancient knowledge from Vedas and modern science of sustained release and encapsulation has resulted in the formulation of these unique, extremely low toxic and environment-friendly repellent products.

These repellents are available in bio-degradable plastics like Polylactic acid (PLA) and are also offered as liquid masterbatch solutions for bio-compostable and bio-degradable plastics.

The product triggers a fear response within the pest whenever it comes across an application treated with these products, thereby exploiting the fight or flight response or sending chemical signals to insects that there is danger using semiochemicals. While rodents being social animals, they communicate the bad experience to their population in the vicinity.

Mother earth is constantly suffering from human originated problems like toxic products, industrial wastes, etc. Having realized this right at the outset, CTech has consistently evolved sustainable green practices in the development of these products. The active substances of the masterbatch products meet the regulatory guidelines and are sufficiently effective.

CTech is committed to developing innovative, profitable, and environmentally safe products for the past 25 years. C Tech Corporation can provide products to the exclusive needs of the end-user and its use with bioplastic based applications can prove as an efficient solution to the environment!
